WASHINGTON — When some of President Donald Trump's top national security advisers gathered at the White House Tuesday night to talk about the surge of immigrants
across the southern border, they discussed increasing the U.S. military's involvement in the border mission, including whether the military could be used to build tent city
detention camps for migrants, according to three U.S. officials familiar with the conversations.
During the meeting, the officials also discussed whether the U.S. military could legally run the camps once the migrants are housed there, a move the three officials said was
very unlikely since U.S. law prohibits the military from directly interacting with migrants. The law has been a major limitation for Trump, who wants to engage troops in his
mission to get tougher on immigration.
Discussions this week, at the White House meeting and afterward, have included the suggestion that troops may be needed to run the tent city detention camps once
immigrants are being housed there, according to the U.S. officials familiar with the conversations.
The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits the use of federal troops for domestic law enforcement inside the U.S. This prevents them from direct interaction with immigrants crossing
into the country.
Can we stop calling them "detention camps"? They're concentration camps.

I couldn't see that shit keeping quiet if they used existing military personnel. Someone would leak/speak out. It's far harder to control information in 2019 than it was in 1940.
this is objectively fascism in action. I wish I could understand how everything went horribly wrong over the past 2 decades to put us here, where the leadership of this country that supposedly stands for freedom has turned into probably the biggest joke of nation with division just getting worse and worse with each passing day, facilitated by a man who literally can't go a day without lying, and the hundreds of leeches sucking at his belly for the chance to make their bigotry and sheer contempt for anyone who is on the "other side" the norm, and the worst part of it is that it seems to be working, because in my memory the US and even the world at large has never felt this divided.
I grew up being told to be careful of history repeating itself and not to make the same mistakes others made in the past, but nobody prepared me for the idea of literally millions of deluded Americans being gaslit and manipulated into thinking the authoritarians of this country actually want what is best for them, despite them repeatedly proving that that thought couldn't be any further from the truth.
A scenario that isn't very hard to imagine is military run detention camps and then later introducing forced labour because someone will probably say "they have to pay for their great food and accommodation we give them so it's only fair also they're criminals".
Mass extermination on the level of Nazi Germany is very unlikely, but executing people for lesser crimes would likely become the norm. Unless someone starts saying the word "treason" a lot and then suddenly there's a lot of terrorists wanting to destroy America and they live all among you and the government needs powers to stop them.
Though now that I think about it it sounds a lot more plausible than it probably should

That's easy. Those two decades ago, a small county of idiots in Florida decided to be characteristically stupid with their ballot layouts. A tiny microcosm of idiocy that - in a fair timeline - would rightfully have affected nothing and said county would have remained unimportant and forgettable until the end of time, but in ours managed to tip us just enough over the wafer-thin line that was holding the Scalia-led Supreme Court back from selling the 2000 presidency to the Bush dynasty and their oil baron friends. Cue said corporate-bought administration throwing away the intel that would've allowed them predict and prevent 9/11 so that they could have an excuse to invade the Middle East and get their hands on more oil, thereby sending the entire planet plummeting into the post-terrorist Republican dystopia of memetic xenophobia and violent fear that we find ourselves in today, especially once the droves of insecure and easily-frightened rednecks that were bred as a result of said dystopia got really angry that a black guy was their leader and elected a geriatric neo-Nazi manchild to run the world's largest superpower into the ground because they thought it would piss off a bunch of twenty-year-old girls in California, whom they hate because they don't hump their dogs.

It's the internet age. Every atrocity will be seen in excruciating detail. TBD if it will make anyone do something about it.

na we know Cheney and Rumsfeld were working on how to pin 9/11 on Iraq from the beginning of the attack. Whether they had planned to let it happen is pure conspiracy but the administration immediately pivoted to iraq even as they were hunting osama in afghanistan and pakistan.
In another time, people likely would've stood up and said something ages ago.
The issues preventing it now are:
Loss of focus: Entities like the Internet, social media, and general mass media provide a much more easy out these days. An easy way to distract both yourself and the mass public from their real world problems.
Spread of Misinformation: Previously stated entities are also a cause of a much easier spread of intentional misinformation, as well as a burial of objective truth and fact. In fact, so much so, to the point where the very concept of "truth" or "fact" is being broken down into something more and more relative to the perception of the individual. Instead of what is actual reality, people are instead choosing to believe what they want to think is reality.
Complacency/Inconvenience: People don't want to get off of their own asses to do anything. They want everyone else to do it for them. And likewise, most everyone else tends to feel the same way. So nothing really gets done.
Inability: It's harder for Millennials (and a lot of folk in general now) to stand up, when they're trying all they can just to pay their bills and make ends meet. Quite a few working more than one job, and hardly having any free time.
Fear of social retribution: Some of us could potentially be afraid to speak out or do anything for fear of being looked down upon or treated poorly by those we care about, or think highly of.
I don't like to think things are impossible, but it's definitely going to be a much harder fight this time around. If we want to win this battle, it's going to take a genuine concerted effort. Careful, well-thought out planning, and proper execution.
After this, the military ban, and his response to the NZ shooting, I don't ever want to see another person get offended when they are called bigoted for supporting Trump and are fully aware of all the stuff he has done.
Because the people most outraged to do this are the people who'd be most screwed by "taking to the streets."
I'm in the suburbs an hour outside of NYC, right now. Where am I going to go? I have college work to get done, and a job to go to in about an hour. If I call out of that job to say "I'm off to go protest the coming of the American Immigrant Halocaust," I'd get told "stop being a ridiculous drama queen and come in." But say I quit my job so I can actually take to the streets. Well, now I don't have an income. And when I'm protesting, I'm not getting my classwork done, so I can't finish college. Well, shit, now I'm not employed or educated.
I understand "givng your life to the cause," but that seems to have become entry level for a lot of people to be activists. My, and many others', lives are in such a delicate balance that we can't afford to take to the streets.
