Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro drew veiled rebukes from Israel on Saturday after saying the Nazi genocide of the Jews during World War Two could be forgiven.
The far-right Bolsonaro made a solidarity visit to Israel last month during which he raised eyebrows by asserting, after a tour of the Holocaust memorial Yad Vadshem, that the Nazis had been “leftists.”
Addressing a group of Brazilian evangelicals on Thursday, Bolsonaro said: “We can forgive, but we can’t forget. That’s my phrase. Those who forget their past are condemned not to have a future.”
There was no immediate response from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has cultivated ties with Bolsonaro.
But President Reuven Rivlin, whose role in Israel is largely ceremonial, wrote on Twitter: “Whether they be individuals or organizations, party heads or heads of state, no one will ordain the Jewish people’s forgiveness, nor can this be obtained through any interest.”
Yad Vashem said in a separate statement: “It is no one’s place to decide who can be forgiven and whether there should be forgiveness for the crimes of the Holocaust.”

Bolsonaro with the hat-trick: 1. Nazis are leftist 2. The Holocaust can be forgiven and 3. this is all after promising to echo Trump by moving the embassy to Jerusalem - a promise he quickly walked back after "not considering the difficulties"
Ha ha ha?
Uhm, what?
“We can forgive, but we can’t forget"
no, we shouldn't forgive
“It is no one’s place to decide who can be forgiven and whether there should be forgiveness for the crimes of the Holocaust.”
you're right
nobody should be forgiven, period
By this logic, someone kills you, and you'll just forgive them
after all, what is better: 10 million people, or 1 brazilian boi?
Dont get me wrong I'm all about forgiveness and being the better man and stuff but dude
It's the holocaust we're talking about here
Literally an autonomous genocide created out of the hatred and bigotry of others that killed millions
Some things just can't be forgiven, and I think the holocaust is certainly one of them
Did he forgive the dude that made him an honorary pin cushion? I think not.
Okay lets pretend it can be forgiven. Who are we forgiving, then? The German state? Modern Germany had nothing to do with it, nobody who holds any power at all is connected in any real way. The German people? Not only is the same point valid as for the state, but the idea that any german should need forgiveness for his father's sins is downright offensive. The handful of surviving people who did participate? Does he treally think that their individual actions are forgiveable?
I mean, of course he does. Otherwise he'd set a bad precedence for himselg and his buddies.
The whole notion of forgiveness will soon be moot anyway because everyone directly involved will be dead. Even now you'd be hard pressed to find someone directly involved. What's the point in even going there? Cross-generational guilt is retarded.
"The Nazi's are leftists" "Forgive the holocaust"
Come on you far-right shit smear, you're not even trying.
Far-right and Holocaust denial/doubting/altering of the facts and so on go in pair.
I don't understand, who are you trying to forgive, if most nazi establishment, SS-men, Gestapo members, etc are dead by this point? Modern neo-nazis that didn't do it in the first place or some grandpas in their 100s? What, forgive the german government that nowadays has nothing to do with the nazi regime?
The Nazis were leftists. That's why all these people who defend Nazi ideology seem to vote for Trump, right?
Is he trying to get more people to stab him?
It's not the manner of should things be forgiven (and forgotten), it's a mere fact that such things inevitably occur
If it was otherwise then everyone would already be bankrupt from reparations over something that happened millennia ago. Poor Mongolia. Luckily for them, the passage of time heals all wounds
Don't pretend there's any nuance here, lol. This isn't a philosophically-minded statement on determinism. It's an authoritarian, racist buffoon making what is, at best, a thoughtless gaffe, and at worst, a result of the kinds of conversations he has when surrounded by other authoritarian, racist buffoons.
And on that determinism: the fuck kind of limp-dick, far-right enabling attitude is "these things just happen" when talking about the fucking Holocaust? That's less dogwhistle, more wolfhorn
I'm fairly sure he is saying it since he want's to start a holocaust/genocide in his own country.
Who is there to genocide in Brazil even?
He probably meant the neo-Nazis that still carry those beliefs long after Nazi Germany's defeat. The Holocaust is a huge blight on people that hold those Nazi-like beliefs because everyone is quick to point out to them that their beliefs caused it. Views on the Holocaust among other Neo-Nazis vary by group or person, typically either denying it happened (It was a Jewish conspiracy), or by rejecting the Nazi label altogether whilst still maintaining Nazi-like beliefs (overlaps heavily with "Nazis were left-wing"), but the most hardcore Nazis will typically be pro-holocaust and even advocate for more.
Nothing was gained from the holocaust, either.
"Where there is an indigenous reserve, there are riches under it. We have to change that." - Bolsonaro, video in Portuguese
In the same speech he takes aim at Quilombolas (Afro-Brazilian communities), who he has previously said "are not even fit to breed"
On a ride out with your family? Well you're poor and black, so get ready for the military to take some 80 shots at your family vehicle

Bolsonaro's response? "The army didn't kill anyone, no, the army is of the people. We can't accuse 'the people' of being murderers. There was an incident, there was a death, we lament the death of this honest, working citizen." (in portuguese). Bolsonaro's justice minister, Moro, showed great tact (except no, of course he didn't), saying "it's something that happens". Moro's first major proposal would've extended the reach of police's 'license to kill'
It won't be called genocide, it'll be "anti-crime operations" within what is functionally a police state imposed on the poorest sectors of the population, by our trustworthy officers.
Also Vuu, I know you're a walking cringe compilation who's had to take up edginess to make up for the lack of a spine, but can you tone down the "manipulator" shtick? It's transparent as all hell, especially when I already know where you stand (and that's quite close to ethnic cleansing)
have you ever in your entire life made a good post?
and that dude almost deserves a star for doing it aswell
Not a nice thing to say, but then again, he was trying to kill a guy excusing the holocaust...
