President Donald Trump formally vetoed a measure that would force his administration to end U.S. military support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen.
This war is only gonna get uglier from here. Diseases have skyrocketed, food is near non-existent, and PMCs with all of their new shiny toys are rolling in. The Houthis are also developing new weapons like air-bursting ballistic missiles and they have been specifically using them against Saudi towns.
Trump lied??? No way, he would never!
just shows that congress has absolutely failed in its legislative duty in delegation of power. the president has authorized a war against congress's wishes and has misappropriated funds without congressional approval because the legislative checks are absolutely worthless.
This is an inherent problem in presidential systems.
No, congress delegated its power because they thought they couldn't respond fast enough or with a unified voice and now the presidency can and does dominate the legislature.
Additionally the legislature still has sufficient powers, just the people holding that power are also firmly pro-Trump. It's not so much "the president has too much power" (though he does), it's that when we the created balance of power, we hadn't really considered a scenario in which an outside group would gain a firm hold on all branches of government.
"I haven't forgotten 9/11! Now let me veto a bill attempting to pull us out of a war that we joined because we're allies with the people who funded the terrorists who did 9/11"
Jesus Jumping h fucking Christ that image. You know i'd usually be the one who goes "I hate seeing nsfl stuff". But at this point, that image is probably the only thing we got left that can convince people how fucked Yemen is atm.
So since it was passed through Congress that means they'll take a stand and override his ve-hahahahaha sorry I couldn't keep that delusion up
Call me an idiot but what's even the point of having these sort of votes in Congress (that's where I assume the original decision came from) if the president can just veto them so easily?
puts people on record, otherwise nothing since the GOP is basically a monarchist party at this point.
Congress can override presidential vetoes with a sufficient majority, but it's a high bar to hit.
Disgusting. Funny how Trump (and previous administrations) are anti-Islamist, but forego criticism of Saudi despots.
Wasn't there a Yemeni Facepuncher that was in the middle of the conflict as well? Poor man. I hope he's doing okay.
It only passed by 4 votes in the Senate. Not nearly enough for a veto override.
How does he even keep track of the goalposts?
not to mention Mitch Mcconnell is absolutely terrified of having to vote on anything trump could veto so he blocks anything he can, these resolutions are privileged so he can't stop them but he can whip enough against it to make sure there isn't support for an overturn
"Not stopping the war so the war will be over faster" sounds like a parody galaxy brain meme.
Wheatley and his family made it out of there a couple of months ago now, first to Egypt then to Malaysia. He has just enrolled on a major in animation/art.
I told him to come back to tell the news, but he keeps forgetting it .
Can't have a war when everyone is dead.
The US isn't in a war. They are providing support to Saudi Arabia, who is in a war. The same way the US provided support to Britain, France and the Soviet Union between 1939 and 1941.
I greatly dislike that he vetoed this, but he is well within his powers to do so.
No kidding. Trump has hijacked the party wholesale. Any currently elected GOP politician who dared go against Trump would be crucified by their base and primaried out by a MAGA-bootlicker.
gotta find the us government somehow considering all the tax cuts to the rich
Holy shit, that subreddit is total scum. Just skimmed through a few discussions.
