An age-check scheme designed to stop under-18s viewing pornographic websites will come into force on 15 July.
From that date, affected sites will have to verify the age of UK visitors.
If they fail to comply they will face being blocked by internet service providers.
But critics say teens may find it relatively easy to bypass the restriction or could simply turn to porn-hosting platforms not covered by the law.
Twitter, Imgur and Reddit, for example, will not be required to administer the scheme because they fall under an exception where more than a third of a site or app's content must be pornographic to qualify.
Likewise, any platform that hosts pornography but does not do so on a commercial basis - meaning it does not charge a fee or make money from adverts or other activity - will not be affected.
So, not only is this law stupid, but doesn't even half-arse an attempt to implement anything meaningful. Who seriously pays for porn on the Internet?
Who seriously pays for porn on the Internet?
A whole lot more people than you realize. BTW, one of the top age verification services is owned by Mindgeek - yeah, the company who owns Pornhub and all the other porntube sites. In case you peopl still need to be reminded: Pornhub is NOT your friend, never mind the effective PR. They're as scummy a corporation as any - and they've also seriously harmed many smaller producers because of their complete lack of concern regarding piracy of any content they don't own.
"Please enter the verification code of your wank-loicense"
The pornographic platforms themselves will have freedom to choose how to verify UK visitors' ages.
Well maybe this isn't so bad, I wonder how-
Mindgeek, one of the adult industry's biggest players, has developed an online system of its own called AgeID, which it hopes will be widely adopted. It involves adults having to upload scans of their passports or driving licences, which are then verified by a third-party.
HAHAHA NO.
This is just a pointless waste of everyone's time.
Who would the third party be who verifies that anyway?
I feel bad for you brits.
I don't even have a fucking passport or driving licence. Still, I have always used free sites so it doesn't really matter. I don't understand the government's objective if they're only going after commercial sites if their aim is to stop young people looking at porn online. AFAIK, you already need a credit card for a lot of commercial porn sites in the UK, so I only see this as adding more obstacles.
it's gonna be as easy to get past as age verification on the Steam store
Funnily enough, the largest online porn conglomerate mind-geek just happens to run a service that ALL commercial porn sites will have to sign up for if they want to be legal and pay mind-geek for verification.
Because it is 100% a very well thought out plan.
Twitter, Imgur and Reddit, for example, will not be required to administer the scheme because they fall under an exception where more than a third of a site or app's content must be pornographic to qualify.
Genuine question. Who, other than Ted Cruz, is using Twitter for porn? And who would even consider using it?
A load of NSFW artists fled to Twitter after the Tumblr porn purge
Do they really expect people to upload their passport details to look at porn? I'm sure those details will be safely protected haha
This is so unenforceable it's stupid, proxy's exist.
My main worry is they can just block off any website and say it's more than 1/3rd porn.
But still, Webm exists. Twitter exists, you just have to search a little harder for it now but considering how easy it was on the first place...
Literally what person with a brain is going to tie their fucking passport details to porn. You'd have to be retarded to do this.
Luckily it has dodged that bullet. While ministers have ordered porn sites to age-verify users, they have not told them how they must do so.
That means different sites will have different systems
Those "porn passes" that your friendly local newsagent may soon dish out are a theoretical solution, but there is no obligation for any porn site to accept them.
So, you may potentially have to verify yourself several times for several porn sites.
giving your driver's license/passport to a scummy industry that will do anything to get a buck isn't bad enough, you have to do it several times across different providers. Advertisers must love this shit. I'd rather pay for a VPN than trust anyone in the porn industry with my personal info
This is my thoughts as well. It feels like one of those laws that has changed so much from when the initial idea was proposed that it's not going to even achieve the stupid objectives they had for it in the first place.
Furries
Bringing "OI, WANKER" to new heights.
In the day of data hacks of the webs biggest and supposedly most secure companies, they want people to upload scans of passports? Have they lost their minds?
For Russian audience Pornhub has made it mandatory to sign in through the country's biggest social network (VK.com). That by itself is retarded enough, now they want UK's audience's passport details? Fucking lel
Whats the betting that the verification for the actual porn passes is shit and everyone can use the same code on any number of sites regardless of who or where.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm that isn't going to set up a near or total monopoly. No sir.
If websites allow 1/3 of content to be porn cant porn sites just have massive libraries of free, old books?
Ban hentai while you're at it
How do they determine this anyways, by data volume? What if the site offers life streams?
They have a man read all the books and masturbate to all the porn, each is measured in time.
This man must also attend all live shows.
This is going to be as effective as clicking "I am 18"... I'm actually kinda depressed that such a stupid law got through. If there was anything I'd protest it would be freedom of porn. Not even to mention the inevitable data breaches that will come of this.
This is the kind of idea that gets thrown out after a couple of policy meetings, but they've actually taken it all the way. Incredible
