I think the worst part is that that we won't be seeing unfinished builds of Duke Forever, or (more) unfinished builds of Duke 3d. Shadow Warrior? Yeah, Devolver was able to petition 3D Realms to dump all they had - even one that didn't work without a security dongle that they told people to just see if they could reverse engineer. Pitchford shot down the idea of releasing Duke3d/Duke4 betas though. In his word, they can only be re-released if sold due to publisher hot potatoe.
There was a time when I would have believed this, nowadays I'm not so sure.

The shit PC port that took a rather interesting console Bond game, probably one of the best even, and somehow mangled it onto the GoldSrc engine into a nigh-unrecognizable and genuinely inferior state that didn't even remotely play like its console counterpart besides being an FPS.
Gearbox is lucky Borderlands is the big money maker that it is, because without it they would've rotted off years ago.
I legitimately believe that they shouldn't succeed with 3. I know that 2 is loved but I feel a lot of people like to sweep under the rug that to get Borderlands 2; two smaller teams were fucking bankrupted and an entirely different game had its development funds stolen for Borderlands 2.
Borderlands is the definition of 'there is no ethical consumption under capitalism'.
I think a lot of people forget that Halo's PC port was actually pretty poor and technically inferior to the xbox version unless you download a bunch of fan patches (which aren't as simple as clicking an exe.)
Though CE was a good decision on their part.
