Former Peruvian president Alan Garcia died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head as police were preparing to arrest him on corruption charges Wednesday. His death was confirmed by current President Martin Vizcarra, who expressed his condolences over Twitter. (...) Garcia, who served as president from 1985 to 1990 and from 2006 to 2011, was under investigation for bribery in connection with a massive corruption scandal that has engulfed a number of former Latin American leaders. What a coward. Couldn't have faced the music.
Good riddance, but the fucker deserved to rot in prison
Police were in his house, warrant in hand, and they allowed him to walk away and lock himself into another room? Jesus Christo.
The police fucked up massively, to allow a suspect to go into a room unsupervised to do who knows what. Maybe they thought they could trust him because of his status, but it's still a massive fuck up.
As far as we know, things went like this: Midnight - Prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez informs the National Police that an arrest order has been made against Garcia. 06:30 - Prosecutor Henry Almonte and six policemen of the DIVIAC (Division of High Complexity Investigation) arrive at Garcia's home. They want to keep the operation in a low profile. Prosecutor Almonte is welcomed by Garcia's home staff. He presents the arrest order, and is allowed inside, along his police escort. Garcia appears, and is informed of the arrest order. Inmediately he rushes to the second floor, claiming that he needs to call his lawyer (Given that this was Garcia's private residence, his lawyer was not present at the moment of arrest. Nor was he required to be). An intedermined group of policemen go after him. Garcia locks the door of his bedroom. A few moments later, while the policemen are trying to force the door open, a gunshot is heard. Another group of policemen force their way inside through a window, and find Garcia in a chair, handgun in hand, and with a bullet wound in the head. (Later information reveals that this is one of his three personal sidearms) ~07:00 - Garcia is evacuated to a nearby hospital with a severe hemorrage. He undergoes at least three surgeries. ~10:00 - Garcia dies Source: (Spanish) Alan García
Meanwhile the Brazilian Supreme Court president is involved in one of these scandals and one of the court's ministers has ruled that outlets that publish an article about it should be fined. it's not even fake news, it's part of Operação Lava Jato and they're desperately trying to hide the wrongdoings these shitheads did
Man, 30 years is way too long to wait for a president to shoot himself.
We've know that he was corrupt since the 80s, but we never had any evidence. Until Lava Jato and Odebretch blew up, and suddenly we found the rope we could hang him from (Metaphorically speaking). He has always deflected his critics, daring them to procure a single piece of paper that validated their accusations. Garcia is a lawyer, and he has filled the APRA party with lawyers willing to die for the party. He was virtually untouchable. Then in 2014, Odebrecht exploded. And Odebretch had files and shady contracts. Files that neither Garcia or his lawyers could tamper with. And we began to find links between his closest associates and Odebretch. And suddenly he went into the defensive. He had never received any money. He lives from conferences, talks and book publications. It was deplorable that so many politicians and close associates were involved. But people noticed. He was beginning to panic. In November of 2018, he was banned from leaving peruvian territory. At first he accepted the order, saying in public that he considered it a "badge of honour" to cooperate with justice. Then he attempted to find asylum in the residence of the Uruguayan ambassador. When his request was denied. Suddenly, all his big talk fell apart. The people had come to see him as a coward, and the investigation pressed forward to find something to nail him. Five months later, with the noose and handcuffs at the ready, he choses the easy way out. It's the ultimate insult against his party, one that considers it an honour that so many of their members have been imprisoned, exiled and harassed for their political ideas. Well, if there's a nugget of gold in this mess, is that the APRA can literally NOT survive without Alan Garcia. The APRA is, effectively, dead, and thank God for that. Little more than a political cult, at this point.
