The World War Z book author actually spoke about the movie and how little it had to do with the film when he was at Comic Con:

Epic Store exclusive while we're at it.
You could have made a co-op shooter about anything and it would have been unique. Nope, zombies. Like we've done three types, people, zombies, and bestial aliens (Okay, four, Vermintide) but somehow went and got the license for such a HOT PROPERTY that was WWZ.
The worst part is that at least some of the other L4D style games, particularly Vermintide, took their own route with things despite their obvious inspiration. WWZ on the other hand is like a third-person L4D right down to a couple survivors sharing archetypes, enemies identical to the Hunters and Chargers in functionality, and other weird decisions. It's like they didn't even try to make something new with the concept at all.
Idk about you guys but it looks fun to me.
Ah well, we still got Back 4 Blood to look forward too
I feel this is a good opportunity to mention Deep Rock Galactic.
Honestly, played it a bit and it isn't half bad, imo. It's fairly solid, is good for casual play while harder difficulties are pretty goddamn intense with how much they throw at you and how hard they can hit, and the progression systems are neat, plus everything else down the line is free, which for being a 35 buck game is pretty nice.
I mean I like the dude and the video but like Dunky I'm not going to have them be the final word for a game I'm looking forward to. All videos I've seen point to some good ideas for WWZ and hopefully when the finals are done I can get the final word elsewhere and see if it's worth all the hubbub.
I'm looking forward to what the the zombie horde swarming feature can do with panicking players.

honestly seeing the hordes flow towards you is incredibly disheartening and fear/panic inducing, which makes it all the more of a 'holy shit we lived' moment afterwards, as is appropriate when you have the entire population of a chunk of a city flinging themselves at you any way they can, and the moment you actually allow them to reach you you're fucked and literally pinned under the sheer weight of dead clawing at you.
To be frank it looks generic, but well made.
Though the biggest problem is likely going to be the potential player counts taking a massive hit from being an Epic exclusive.
There seems to be a steady playercount at least, due to egs making it front page for a while, iirc, and youtuber coverage is gonna shove a lot of that up too, so we'll see.
I know the gameplay systems are extremely incompatible, but I'd love if Vermintide had this system of movement for the Skaven. The tide would feel a lot more deserving of the name.
Why is this getting shit? It's fun as fuck. I just wish there were more campaigns.
I mean, to me it doesnt seem like it'd make sense for them, because they have the characteristics of a living being, as in they have morale, feel pain, dont want to die, etc. The reason that the horde system exists is to give life to the movie's style of zombies, which are actually pretty fucking terrifying when you think of it; everything is secondary to infecting others, which means literally diving head first off of buildings to even get a glancing bite of a host, using everything a body is capable of do do so, going full tilt sprinting at the first sign of uninfected, bashing against fences and bringing them down by sheer body weight, etc.
Game is fun in concept, only thing similiar to L4D is zombies and how easy you can mow through them (Although they seem easier in this game), other than that it's pretty repetitive and stale. the special zombies aren't even all that special and the VA isn't anything worth writing home about. If you join their discord you can see how small their dev team is so kudos to them for putting what they currently have together, hopefully it grows into something better once they sort out their server issues.
wouldn't be surprised if people are more inclined to shit on games if they're on epic lmfao
I had the same reaction when I heard Turtle Rock were making another zombie game. Hell it's literally called Back 4 Blood.
Like for god's sake, can we get something new?
Zombies are still fun imo
Sure, but Skaven are characterised by their extreme sociopathy. They're insanely paranoid and jealous of oneanother and would sooner stab-oneanother in the back than work together. Rather than running at you and clipping into oneanother as they surround you, I feel it'd be better (definitely not from a gameplay perspective) to have them shove oneanother and climb ontop of eachother. But you're right in that the tide of zombies was the best and only good thing about the WWZ film.
