https://play.esea.net/index.php?s=news&d=comments&id=15396 Over 10 years ago ESEA Launched our first season of the TF2 Open league. Since then thousands of players have enjoyed competing at a higher level in what is one of the more unusual esports games that has set the tone for more recent titles like Overwatch. In the last 10 years the ESEA TF2 League has:  Ran 29 League seasons spanning 10+ years Hosted 14 LAN events featuring TF2 Awarded nearly $400,000 in prize money Recently, we’ve tried adding new features and adjusting formats including adding vetoes, removing the League fee for the Open division, selling external sponsorships and significantly modifying the prize distributions. Despite this, the number of players making the jump to competitive TF2 is lower than ever. For the last several seasons ESEA has continually contributed significantly more to the TF2 prize pool than what is naturally generated by the League fees. Without the community support as TF2 now features under 1% of our ESEA player base (despite almost $45,000 in prizes each year) it no longer makes sense for ESEA to operate given that the same resources invested into CS:GO will affect vastly more players.  As a result, ESEA League Season 31 will be the last season of the TF2 League. Anyone who has taken part in a TF2 match at any stage of their ESEA career will be awarded an ESEA profile badge indicating so at the end of this season. We would like to thank the TF2 community for their support over the last 10 years.
Thanks Valve, you're inability to give a shit has effectively killed TF2's competitive scene. Hope it was worth it.
Despite your apathetic behavior, the only thing you've managed to break so far is my heart.
I think this is one of the final nails in the coffin for TF2. It's really an end of an era now. Time for b4nny to pick up Apex Legends I guess.
Nah TF2 will live on for quite awhile longer via its strong community and meme legacy. Comp TF2 on the other hand...
Final nails in the coffin of a top 10 game on Steam
Not surprised. TF2 was not designed with competitive play in mind and it shows. I would love it if Valve could go back to the game's old roots and focus on enhancing the casual gameplay experience. Matchmaking still has plenty of issues.
Plus the lack of accessibility to community made gameplay content such as maps and custom modes. It's far too difficult to find active custom maps. I'd like a que system for workshop maps at the least.
holy shit didnt even know TF2 had an esports scene
Can we get an F for our main man b4niel.
well what did you expect them to do? they needed people to work on Artifact... sigh
Maybe now weapons can be balanced around fun, instead of pandering to a dying scene
I sincerely appreciated playing comp TF2 a fair bit of time ago. I did notice that it was unbelievably stringent when it came to maintaining rules and banning literally every single unlock out there. One of the possible issues with comp TF2 may be the fact that it's consistently dominated by retardedly experienced players without anyone to dethrone them. I watched B4nny's stream multiple times and never saw him get beaten in MGE even once. The comp TF2 community has this weird ass issue that games with dying MP communities have where it's only populated by ultra hardcore dudes who stay instead of moving to the newer one... except that the TF2 player base is actually pretty active.
literally what are you talking about, tf2 balance right now is the best it ever had been - it could be a lot fucking better for sure, but this is far more acceptable than what pre-gunmettle TF2 was
Pack your bags, a lot of weapons get buggered up with the balance, including things that didn't need to be changed because people are too dumb to figure out how not to get killed by them (Ambassador for one example)
Spy is my 2nd most played class and the ambassador nerf is one of the best recent balance change to this game. Spy shouldn't be a walking noscoping sniper two shotting medics across the map. And it's still very deadly, I get killed by good spies with it frequently who learned the new range. And then there's all the other great changes like the sandman, pyro flames consistency, etc. The game is more balanced gameplay wise than ever, when 4-5 years ago updates wouldnt always improve the balance and they didn't get it right as often.
Valve could have easily not only prevented this but catapaulted the game to new heights
Ah well, I used to play it just for shit and giggles back then.
Yeah dude, honestly, a multiplayer-only game having such a presense for 12 years is fucking impressive. I say instead good on Valve for putting so much into this game for it to make it this far.
I'm tempted to make an account and pay the fee in order to play in this final season, and yet, i know my efforts will be in vain
I mained Spy with the Ambassador. It more-than-deserved a nerf. Half-the-time I played comp years ago, I was basically being a mobile sniper because I can see very subtle movement from long distances. The nerfs made Spy players actually play the class as he should be, which is CQC-based with a panic gun option. Dr. Enforcicle was way worse, but the Ambassador was still disproportionately powerful.
Or maybe, get this, Valve are fucking gibbering morons when it comes to balancing TF2.
Only because they keep listening to the whiniest pricks of the playerbase
Most changes were overwhelmingly popular, everyone hated the sandman outside of a few scouts mains, same for the amby and gun spies. The whiners are usually thoses who enjoy the 1 single playstyle that ruins everyone else's and then gets nerfed. The game is more fun than ever and casual works better than ever (could be better without random crits, but remember the matchmaking times that are now >10s)
every time i see this type of sentiment i always point to smash bros melee where it hasn't got a single update, has NO ONLINE PLAY and the creator says it's not a competitive game yet it's still quite popular. Melee has a lot of issues but I respect it for staying strong and lugging around huge CRTs just to play.
Valve added competitive matchmaking into the game. That indicates that Valve had an interest in creating a competitive scene
