When my friend insisted I watch the first episode, I actually had a similar initial reaction to the show as Critical and didn't end up trying it properly until Season 2 was out. I felt really dumb the second time round when I realised how great the show is. I think it was partly because I had a certain conception of what fantasy TV shows can sometimes be like and wasn't really familiar with HBO at the time.
