Aren't the "Jim Crow" scenes in Dumbo extremely integral to the plot Like, aren't they where he gets the magic feather?
ive never understood this, why cant they just be like looney tunes and release them, but show this at the beginning: https://i.imgur.com/U8UZyVI.jpg
Damn there goes my interest On a serious note, I get it, but I would have preferred the old Warner Bros approach of "the following shit you're about to see is fucked, but hey it happened and we wont dance around it and pretend this didnt happen"
Yes.
I would much prefer if they did it the Warner Bros way and released it, but I'm really not tearing up all that much for the loss of them either.
I can understand Song of the South, honestly -- not because of its content (which is relatively insensitive but not as heinous as it's made out to be) but because of its rep. The crow scenes though.. ?? They just need a disclaimer like others have said.
Should've just done what the Nickelodeon version of Dragon Ball Z and just turned the crows blue. https://i.imgur.com/7ZA5a9D.png
So the new storyline of Dumbo is him and Timothy getting shit-faced and then starting killing clowns and wreck the circus? Bad ass.
This is so relevent to a lot of media at the moment.
I dont' like the use of the term "wrong" which implies that it is a black and white affair with no nuance, imposing on the viewer what's good and bad. Makes me feel awkward to be honest, not sure if I'm reading to much into this.
Yeah man "racism is wrong" is such an awkward opinion
What are you on lmao "Um it's not 'wrong' to say you hate the blacks please have some nuance"
I just watched Song of the South a couple days ago. Was there some racist stuff? Yes. Was it terrible? Honestly, no. The plot revolves around slaves/indentured servants living on a plantation with the moral of the story being "don't try to run away from what you know you should do", if that makes sense. The "tar baby" scene though. People would probably get worked up just hearing that. Regardless, the animated sections were really great and charming. The live actors (mainly the kids) were meh. Most scenes with Uncle Remus were good, especially the live action with animation.
See while this would be best, I kinda get the idea that a vocal minority - a very vocal one that's incredibly loud - will still see this as not good enough. I can't comment on the Dumbo thing because I haven't seen that movie in decades and I can't remember the crows but Song of the South is still part of Disney's history and thusly holds relevance like that. I remember hearing "Zippidy doo da" on Disney compilations and wondering what movie it came from for instance.
Man, the crows had like the best song in the movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_v2exWrsGOc As a kid, I never saw it as racist or exploitation. I heard a great song and some some birds that just oozed style.
Cowards. Instead of denying your history just be honest that you fucked up and show these elements by reminding the viewer of the the reason why they used to be acceptable, but no longer are. Make them educational tools instead of something you just hide in a shoe box in your closet. Like as someone stated above Warner Bros. did this was absolutely no problem.
Honestly I'd get why they did this and I'm not going to cry over it but I feel like they might do the same to Simpsons episodes with Apu.
Here goes Disney trying to wash their racist roots and history under the rug again. Just admit that people from the old days are probably racist shitbags and move on like Warner Bros did.
