Not so fast, say contributors to the Conservative Bible Project. The project, an online effort to create a Bible suitable for contemporary conservative sensibilities, claims Jesus' quote is a disputed addition abetted by liberal biblical scholars, even if it appears in some form in almost every translation of the Bible. The project's authors argue that contemporary scholars have inserted liberal views and ahistorical passages into the Bible, turning Jesus into little more than a well-meaning social worker with a store of watered-down platitudes. "Professors are the most liberal group of people in the world, and it's professors who are doing the popular modern translations of the Bible," said Andy Schlafly, founder of Conservapedia.com, the project's online home. "This is not making scripture understandable to people today, it's reworking scripture to support a particular political or social agenda," said Timothy Paul Jones, a professor at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, who calls himself a theological conservative. "The best of the public is better than a group of experts," said Schlafly, whose mother, Phyllis, is a longtime conservative activist known for her opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment. Jones says the project is a misguided effort to read contemporary politics back into the text. "Ironically, there's a long tradition of the liberal twisting of scripture," Jones said. "Scholars have rightly deemed those translations illegitimate, and this conservative Bible is every bit as illegitimate."
"Reality can be whatever I want it to be."
Sacrilege
>Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. (Deuteronomy 4:2) >Revelation 22:18,19 >18. For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: >19. And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
This is blasphemous for probably every sect of Christianity there is.
...but isn't part of the reason why conservatives hate liberals because they supposedly contort facts into what their feelings support? Sounds like the people behind this gazed into the abyss too long, and the abyss gazed back.
Jesus was actually baby boomer all along. "My child, pull yourself up by your bootstraps."
Literal. Fucking. Antichrists.
What they fail to realize I think is that Christianity has both conservatives and liberals. There are staunch Christian Democrats as much as Christian Republicans. The faith isn't completely split among the political divide of the US.
Imagine rewriting religious scripture to own the libs. This would be hilarious if it weren’t for the terrifying prospect that nearly every conservative Christian would conform the new book.
Jeez maybe I was right when I jokingly said that Trump is the anti-Christ.
This is so fucking hypocritical on so many levels.
If Jesus lived today, these people would enthusiastically crucify him. They aren't Christians. They're American Fascists dressing themselves in the trappings of Christianity.

Okay looking at this article in detail and not having the ESV vs New Conservative Bible Project translations infront of me (because I'm sorry, I can't read Hebrew) it doesn't seem as extreme as the clickbait headline suggests. They're more pissed over a nothing that the ESV translation (which by the by isn't the only translation - there are tons) favors certain wording over others. What an incredibly petty thing to be angry about. And what an incredible clickbait of a headline to boot. If we were only ever allowed one English translation of the bible then we'd likely still be using the King James version - one that's not just old but super inaccurate to boot.
If a conservative accuses liberals of something it's either something they're doing themselves or something they're going to start doing. Whether or not liberals have ever once done it is irrelevant to the equation. I know you're joking, I'm super not looking forward to having a unquestionable and infallible scripture that cannot be criticized and must be given unflinching respect and preferential treatment when it's updated to a shopping list of modern-day conservative wet dreams with a politically-incorrect Jesus who has big opinions on issues that won't exist for 2000 years.
I think some of my braincells just committed hara-kiri.
Republican Jesus was supposed to be a meme you fucking imbeciles.
No, those guys are fucking heretics is what they are.
You're in good company. My grandfather made the exact same joke before the election. (Needless to say, no one in my direct family or my mom's extended family is a fan of Trump. Grandma said that she'd sooner vote for Gary Johnson than vote for the man that loved grabbing women by the pussy.)
Not available in the EU :/ Refusing any new progressive interpretations of a holy book in order to justify being conservative as fuck? Hmm, why it looks like a certain group within Islam?...is a mystery for the ages
This is literal satanism.
American Protestantism is literally just the Heresy Olympics. Go to Europe and you see the Protestants of every variety living the message of Christ to the letter, and following the values of the Reformation as it should be. America? Heretics, heretics everywhere. Decadent megachuches, Prosperity Gospel, Mormonism... So much heretical shit. France and England made some grave mistakes merely exiling them.
I can't read the article on my phone, but even if it's not a big change this time conservatives have been looking for an out for a while now to get around the fact that they use Christianity as a weapon without being remotely passable Christians. An alarming amount of them have never read the Bible or are even all that aware of what the tenets of their religion even are and are often surprised or frustrated to learn that Jesus specifically spoke against a lot of the shit they're currently doing. You think if propagandists start spreading the idea of Liberalized Jesus and start handing out "real" translations that just happen to line up way more heavily with what conservatives want now that any one of them is gonna check into that? Fuck no, it's going to be adopted via confirmation bias by crazies who'll browbeat the rest of them into using it because the other book is the fake news Democrat one and you're not a Democrat are you?? It's already fucked that we're arguing law against very imaginative interpretations of a several thousands year old text, imagine what it will be like when the "Bible" and "Jesus" start commenting very clearly and directly on social policies and minorities.
Fuck me, I almost thought this was happening a second time. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/2304/7e741308-4d7c-4856-b55e-51044d14c166/image.png Conservapedia was actually worth caring about in 2009. In 2019 it's fucking dead and last time I checked was just a shitblog literally nobody cares about.
Are you really a christian if you try to rewrite the fucking bible to fit in with your beliefs? Just go make your own religion at that point. Because you are not a Christian.
Wait, why the fuck are we reposting shit from 2009 here?
Wait what? This was ten years ago? It was insane then, but it seems like it could've happened now.
Trust me, the edits Schlafly made twisted the Bible into a capitalistic, evangelical, Randian selfish shitburger. Because this is news from a decade ago.
