https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/handsome-her-vegan-cafe-melbourne-closing-a4124781.html A café that caused controversy by charging male customers a “man tax” to bridge the gender pay divide is closing down. Handsome Her, a vegan café in Melbourne Australia, sparked global debate in 2017 when it announced it would offer women priority seating and charge men an 18 per cent premium to “reflect the gender pay gap”.
As long as they don't spill coffee in your face, I guess
Fighting inequality with inequality! :downs:
A cafe that doesn't understand how averages work, struggles with business. Who'd da thunk it?
I like how rules 1 and 2 breaks rule 3.
Yeah Rule 3 is total bollocks, respect doesn't go both ways at all when you prioritise one sex over the other. A Vegan Cafe aswell, lol.
From what I heard the 18% was actually optional and the main reason for the closing was just terrible service and bad coffee/food. So the mix of annoying half of your customer base plus just bad coffee doesn't invite more people to stay sustainable.
Huh? Plenty of those exsist, not to mention cafes whcih give vegan options.
I guess this only goes to show that if you want to put something out there that you know is going to be controversial, you have to make sure that everything else about it is top notch.
I mean, most startups struggle this day without having something stupid about them, explains why this one didn't survive....
Well the owner obviously has no fucking clue how to run a business. First, you're a vegan cafe, if you're in a place with not alot of vegans, you're at an uphill battle to make more profit than regular F&B places to sustain your business. Then you cater to females, and not just that, you put a fucking tax on men. It was doomed to fail from the start, and that's not forgetting that F&B business close down within a year if they can't even break even within the first year
Somebody should start one that charges white people more to compensate for their privilege.
Fairly certain that it wasn't profitable enough as well.
I dunno, I've just never been able to get behind Veganism to be honest, I can get behind Vegetarianism though, even if I'm definitely not one myself. It's a shame they handled this the way they did because I can get what they're trying to do, but it's so poorly executed it's just embarrassing really.
Decided to look them up a little, and I'm fairly certain that there was no way they were going to last. There are several places in the same area serving vegan options, and besides, they have the lowest ratings of all the places nearby. They seem to have a fairly decent social media marketing, the pictures of food on their instagram actually looks well done. But at the end of the day, customers are your deciding factor. Some reviews: "Food proportions and quality was below average considering the price $20-25 a meal." "Horrible service+overpriced" "This place doesn't practice hygiene and the food is horrible, i went there because i love the idea, but the food is digusting tbh." "Wife and I visited becuase we heard about it. Coffee was less than good, porridge had a hair in it, when I was asked for a new order the rather overweight woman there got an attitude. When she walked away I could smell her B.O. which is completly unhygienic. Overweight girl came back with another order dropped it on the counter like I was the one in the wrong. I thought this would be a good experience. But customer service was horrific. Even my wife thought this place was rather unpleasant. Jesus christ...
It gets worst, check out the tripadvisor page: "I was born a biological man in 1997, but identified as a woman as of 2001. I'm from France and made the stop into this cafe last summer (winter in Australia) while on a trip with my partner.  I was immediately asked "man or woman" by the waitress. I explained that I was biologically a man, but identified as a woman. That must have been enough to charge me extra I guess.  This tells me they are not tolerant of transgender women, and only care what's between my legs. When I asked the waitress why I was charged extra, she said because I told her I was born a male. I explained to her that I identified as female, but she said it was policy to charge all males more. This left me a little bit distraught, as everyone around me has accepted my life choices, but this cafe decided to ignore it.  I will not be going back if I find myself there again." Yikes
Not that the 18c man tax wasn't problematic but do you really think a Vegan only cafe is going to be a financially lucrative business in general?
Look at all that paint on the walls. Wonder if they know that most paint (Damn near all of it, actually. Especially primer.) isn't vegan. Literally dead animal parts painted on the walls.
Lord of the fries is a very successful fast food joint that is completely vegan
'The way the world responded (to the man tax) showed us how fragile masculinity is and solidified the necessity for us to confront and dismantle patriarchy,' the post said. The only thing that turned out to be fragile here were her business plans.
I looked it up, and I'm not surprised, its fast food. Cheap food costs, fast and quick food that is easy to prepare, and highly profitable. If you can make fast food taste good, you're in for good money. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/113069/f4589125-3c81-4030-a9d9-75626030af69/image.png The cafe above is $20 to 25 for terrible service and poor food quality, hell I'll go for these anytime.
holy fuck This place is on my train line, and was brought up going there just for the meme fuck that terf shithole
Several of these exist in SF and Portland in the states, most of them have gone out of business for rather obvious reasons.
Goddamn let me get that number three right now. That combo better come with a Five Guys amount of fries to even justify being $7 extra dollars though.
Co-owner Alexandra O’Brien has not detailed the reason behind the move, but Handsome Her has endured a widespread backlash for its perceived reverse sexism. You mean, sexism?
yeah, they also have a student hour (like actually 3 hours) because they are right next to the campus. Where it like a standard customisable meal for few dollars cheaper than normal
Not gonna lie that sounds kind of good.
Its safe to say, plenty of people who runs businesses around an 'idea' is going to have a very hard time. Not that its impossible, its just the fact that they have a very innocent view of the world, thinking that 'oh hey, I'm progressive, people will surely come' but forgetting the fact that people vote with their wallets, and mouths.
Do Americans like exclusively eat meat or something? You don't need to be Vegan to enjoy Vegan food just like you don't need to be Korean to eat Korean food and so on.
