Gov. Matt Bevin reopened political wounds with Kentucky teachers Thursday when he blamed educators' sickouts for the shooting of a 7-year-old child. During remarks to the Louisville
Rotary Club, which held its meeting at the Muhammad Ali Center, Bevin was responding to a question about what can be done to stem gun violence. Bevin, a Republican, said more
attention needs to be spent on looking at behavioral health and firearm safety as opposed to the government creating more gun regulations.
"One thing you almost didn't hear anything about while we had people pretending to be sick when they weren't sick, and leaving kids unattended to or in situations that they should not
have been in — a little girl was shot, seven years old, by another kid," he said.
The governor appeared to be referring to a March 12 shooting in the Shively area during which a 7-year-old girl was shot by her 11-year-old brother inside their home while their guardian,
their uncle, was outside, officials said. Jefferson County Public Schools was closed on the day of the shooting because of a teacher sickout. It was the fourth out of six total days
JCPS was closed because of sickouts between Feb. 28 and March 14.
After a teacher rally in April 2018 that shut down dozens of school districts across Kentucky, Bevin without evidence told reporters that children were sexually assaulted or ingested
poison somewhere in the state because teachers were not in class.

Maybe look at the issues that is causing the home life of children to be so awful that they would be safer, healthier, and more well fed than at home.
