"We are not rejecting someone because he is coming from faraway, because
he is Chinese, the rules have to be respected," Juncker said
Because they're 'faraway', Juncker?
Imagine being this naive about the way the world works.
This is going to give the perfect fuel for nationalist foreigner-hating parties all around Europe.
How many times does this need to happen for people to realise they aren't dumb? They know exactly what they're doing, they're doing it right in your face, and you're GIVING them plausible deniability
Ah yes, let's endanger our nations security because we don't want to be seen as potentially racist.
I'm not going to say this was all Trump's fault, but its all Trump's fault. The US has walked away, and even become a hostile power to the EU (republicans are giddy at the thought of a brexit in every member state) so their only choice is to build closer ties with China
Not really. Nationalists in Italy are cozying up super close to China (and Russia) and getting soon economy-crippling loans for Belt and Road. Modern Nationalism = anti-EU, anti-Immgration, pro-Authoritarianism.
You're implying our country isn't just as much in bed with China - if not more. Remember, this all started with Bill Clinton's United States–China Relations Act of 2000.
So is there any proof to huawei spying? Or is it just speculation?
China's reputation of being the incarnation of Big Brother in their own country, against their own citizens, is more than enough imo. Huawei is deeply rooted in Chinese politics, and any control over America's telecommunications infrastructure is not a good idea.
ya and Nixon used China as Trump is using North Korea, a pretty distraction devoid of any long term thinking to score short term political favor.
"Only Nixon could go to China" because nobody else was desperate enough to embrace them and give in to their every demand.
To give you a bit of insight why this is happening: there are only two companies in the world who can supply certain necessary components of a 5G network: Huawei and Ericsson.
Now I can see why network operators are lobbying for governments to keep Huawei in the game for as long as possible, as their ban would effectively mean that Ericsson is in a state enforced monopoly, and
Speculation at this point, afaik the US hasn't yet presented any evidence. Thats not to say there isn't any risk involved, funnily enough I think Huawei's own chief security officer gave the best summary of the situation:
“The U.S. fundamentally believes that China would use Chinese companies—even private ones—for the same kinds of things that the U.S. uses American companies for,”
If 5G was a simple upgrade of existing networks, it'd be perhaps more acceptable to simply allow Huawei on the market while keeping them under heavy scrutiny (tbh their products are already under close watch) and manage the risks.
But considering what the intended goals are of a 5G network are, and how it will likely serve as the backbone of some very critical infrastructure (say, low latency data transmission between self driving cars), I'd say the acceptable level of risk is much lower.
But even then, one might wonder how much safer would it be to use eg. Nokia equipment made by a Chinese Foxconn plant. Or whether the Chinese truly need backdoors, or they could achieve the same with exploits on foreign devices which will likely receive less scrutiny by EU governments (the US certainly could).
It's actually required by law for Huawei to spy for Chinese intelligence and keep it a secret.
中华人民共和国国家情报法_中国人大网
"Article 7 - Any organization or citizen shall support, assist and cooperate with the state intelligence work in accordance with the law, and keep the secrets of the national intelligence work known to the public.
The State protects individuals and organizations that support, assist and cooperate with national intelligence work."
Of course supporters of China would have you believe otherwise.
This means that Lenovo is compromised as well? It would be a shame since their laptops are top notch.
Nationalists are blatantly selective in their xenophobia. Especially when it comes to financial interests.
Right wing pundits here have nothing negative to say about China, or Russia for that matter. Even though that one literally tried to annex this country less than 100 years ago, and would do so again if they could get away with it.
They're also very hypocritical. I would not be surprised if they called out current governments for this shit before immediately bending over for Chinese government interests. (or more specifically, bending over for Chinese government money)
I'd imagine not, if there was any surveillance malware I'd imagine it would be done through preinstalled software, not through any hardware vulnerabilities. In fact all of their known controversy has been through pre-installed malware, so if you install a Linux distro or a fresh install of Windows you are more then likely fine.
Nah, they're sinophiles.
You do have to understand that whoever doesn't get onto the 5G train ASAP is basically relegated to non-country status economically, and trust me, you don't want that. I mean, I'm all for nation above everything else, but that's just how the archons think. Only money.
WHY shouldn't we be blatantly selective in our xenophobia?
We absolutely should NOT hand out incredibly work contracts regarding our state's national sensitive telecoms infrastructure to that of a company based in China with an extremely questionable ownership structure ("private company wholly owned by its employees"...), when we know how nationalistic Chinese firms themselves are, not just the state enterprises.
