Terrific video, so much great insight on how and why Molyneux ended up overhyping his games. Regardless of his legacy of overhype and failed games later in his career, Molyneux has always struck me as a super nice guy with some great ideas. Godus definitely soured that view for me, but regardless this video confirms he hasn't magically turned into a mega asshole, he just fucked up a lot and takes lessons from his previous failures. I really can't help but admire his great self reflection here
The only game I ever really tried from Peter’s work is Curiosity. It was actually pretty fun drawing/cutting away at that darn cube from time to time. Maybe if they could’ve arranged for more concrete, traditional prizes like a car or studio tour somewhere (chosen at random to preserve surprise stuff) they could’ve made it an annual thing.
Honestly before Godus, I actually always felt he was picked on a bit too harshly. Dudes like Romero in that he's a visionary with talent - an "Ideas guy" who's able to pull through - but sadly, game design is a field where you often have to make concertation's for gameplay and budget. Don't think this is apologizing for Godus - that's a hard fuckup through and through.
His company is still making games, last one I heard about is a weird walking simulator where you're on a camp trail I think. For what it is, it's alright I guess?
Fable is still one of my favorite games ever made. God I want a Fable 4 so bad.
Rumor has it Fable 4 is in development right now and will be back at E3 this year
Hopefully the take more from Fable 1&2 than Fable 3.
Yeah i hope so, Lionhead is dead so it's a new studio doing it. Although Microsoft latest efforts in their exclusives haven't been great
Personally, what makes me not think of him as a hack or a fraud is that he owns up every fucking time. If not immediately, then eventually. He's passionate and hyped for every project. He's literally what Randy Pitchford could be if he had a soul. or that NMS dude who IMO is neither awesome or a cunt.
I love his mid 90's to mid 2000's output and god i wish people would be less jaded about him. I wish there was room for bigger projects in his future, but it just seems the gaming press and community will fight tooth and nail to tear any future project while felating EA's conjob of the week.
Black and White was so fantastic, and honestly there's still nothing quite like it. The game is like outsider art, it just goes its own way in its design, it hardly adheres to any conventions. Of course this has its drawbacks in some regards, but it also gives the game it's huge charm.
