Doesn't automated firings break a whole arseload of laws, even in the worker's rights hell that is the US?
They should put biosensors in the bottles the staff have had to start pissing in to monitor levels of waste products and ensure that energy is not being wasted in the form of urea.
No. At least in "Right to Work" states you can be fired for literally any reason so long as the "official" reason isn't considered illegal discrimination. Basically so long as the AI doesn't fire you for being black, gay, disabled or a woman, it's legal.
In the UK, shitty jobs like this tend to be fixed-term contracts, so you really have no recourse whatsoever if you're fired.
And people still support Amazon by buying from them... that ‘next day shipping’ must really be worth enabling them to keep on getting away with shit like this.
It's the issue of when something becomes so big that it's a nigh utility. The fact that nigh monopolies like Amazon are capable of existing, is a systemic problem of how companies are allowed hold such a position.
But it’s not. I myself haven’t bought anything from Amazon in over seven years. All it takes is for people to actually have some bloody principles and take their business somewhere else.
Not speaking about you in particular, but I always love that Facepunch gets so angry about Amazon in news articles like this, but those same members will become highly defensive when others tell them to stop financially supporting Amazon. As if shipping that is a few dollars cheaper and comes a day earlier can completely excuse a company’s poor behaviour.
firings are still done by HR but obviously they're going to rubber stamp everything
"LABOR UNIT EFFICIENCY BELOW THRESHOLD. EXCISE!"
For the record, some stuff can only be found on Amazon, the alternative is either a pain in the fucking ass, or cost shitloads.
The company hold people by the balls, and they know you need that particular guitar that is having a discount right now, your wallet is going to go with the more affordable option, because the other option is out of your budget.
Do you:
Wait out till you get enough money?
Buy it because you need the cheaper one, which delivers faster?
There are other delivery sites like taobao, but you're getting products shipping from China, with questionable quality and services, and they aren't treating their employees humanly either (did I also mention you have to fucking translate for english option?)
The alternative is also local shops, but they may not all have what you're looking for.
Amazon carries shit you literally can't find elsewhere.
I was looking for a gas collar for fermentation. 100$ for a tiny piece of plastic in a store here, 7$ with shipping on Amazon.
Why would you ever not spend your money on the cheaper version of the same good?
ding ding ding, It's Time to Take [State] Control of This GANGSTA
Half the shit I buy from Amazon can't be found in any stores nearby. Sure I could go to another website and find them but how will I know they're legit?
Amazon is hard to break because its so damn convenient.
I wonder how long it's going to take before these companies that inducing stress and anxiety like this just lowers productivity?
Reading this instantly reminded of that scene in Enslaved where some poor sod gets his head exploded by robot for talking to the player character.
I WANT to stop using Amazon, but like a few others in this thread, there’s stuff I can’t really buy elsewhere. At least not now, and not where I live now.
I’m trying to find ways and places to get things without Amazon, but I can only do so much right now.
As someone who used to work for Amazon as a picker, they pretty much did send messages like these on your scanner if you were too ""slow"".
Uhh, here in Texas I am able to be fired for being gay. If I recall correctly, in a good amount of the US you can be fired for being gay or trans. Now that'd be not smart on their end as the backlash would not be pretty, but, it'd be legal.
Here’s Everywhere In America You Can Still Get Fired For Being G..
Working as a water spider in an Amazon warehouse wracked my body in ways it took a month to heal from after I quit. Glad to hear they plan to only make the experience shittier.
When my realistic alternatives to buying online other than Amazon are Wal-Mart, owned by Walmart, owned by some Chinese company, or unreasonably expensive or limiting in selection, and my options for buying offline are Wal-Mart, then really expecting me to consume ethically is like expecting me to be poor.
What's the real difference between an AI firing you and some faceless higher-up firing you after crunching your numbers.
One is cold, faceless and lacking in empathy.
The other is just code.
Feels
I can't call an AI an asshole and watch it freak out like a manager does.
Land of the Free indeed.
I've lived my whole life without any reliance on Amazon, it's not exactly difficult.
Well, Amazon sucks here anyways.
Very anecdotal, but I worked for a distribution company that did exactly this. You want to work there? Collect at least 210 parcels an hour. We did it all and over, running 250 so we'd be done faster.
If the work environment is dangerous thats bad and should be panelized, but if it's just "I'm too slow", then sorry: every job requires some decent level of performance. Especially if thousand's of people use it. .
Here's a better plan. Put a collar on every executive that shocks them whenever they're being greedy cunts.
There are absolutely zero federal laws protecting trans people at all, and unless I'm mistaken, zero meaningful local laws either.
Equal opportunity law includes LGBTQ.
