I've been watching Dunkey for like 5 years and I've never gotten tired of it
I know Finley has a habit of throwing spoilers in his videos, how is this one? I've been waiting on them to fix the PC version to play it.
There's one scene past halfway through the game at 3:08-3:16, but it's out of context and he kinda dubs over it so it's nothing really. The rest is just early game cutscenes. 1:17-2:00 might be pretty spoilery but it happens pretty much at the start of the story, so it's your discretion if you wanna skip through that timestamp.
Can somebody explain to me why they took all the sexy costumes out of this game, but they kept all of the insane gore and ridiculous dialogue and story? This series is fundamentally absurd on every level, so the usual complaints leveled against sexy ladies in purportedly "mature" games like Metal Gear shouldn't even apply.
(This is a rhetorical question, by the way. I know exactly why: because some western developers are convinced that they need to cater to the puritanical sex-negative audience, like those people with their designated thread on resetera. Thankfully not all of them, though... at least not yet.)
Because they were boring effortless designs that boiled all the female characters down to personality-less bikini pallet swaps.
idk about that one my man, have you seen Kano?
Eh... it always felt weird to me that Kitana, a woman of royalty, was dressed like she just finished her shift at the strip club.
Those costumes, even more so the ones in MK9, were so goddamn cringy. It felt embarassing whenever someone would see me, or I'd show something, only to have a stripper show up as my enemy. Just look at this:

I think the arguments are less about the costumes and more the ugly faces. Skarlet looks like a monster.
I think her hat is stupid but her face is alright.

her design was so drastically changed though it's off-putting. She had long red hair and now suddenly she has short black/dark brown hair with red highlights. Besides Mileena I think she had the least amount of clothing out of all the women in MKX.
Besides, the faces look fine in MK11? Some of them looked off when they were revealed, but they fixed most of them by release.
Ah I didn't know that, I like the MK games but I don't actually play them. Not a fighting game person personally.
NetherRealms has always had problems modeling female faces though, and while the ones in MK11 aren't perfect, they're a HUGE improvement from the past titles.

The NeatherRealm females actually don't look like dudes with tits now.
Yeah, NR has fucking issues designing women's faces. Did you ever see Injustice 1's Wonder Woman ?

I have to imagine they used 3d scanned faces for some of the characters, between Cage and Kano there are some crazy detailed animations and expressions
They spent all the time doing elaborate models but hired Ronda Rousey for no reason and she's the fucking worst VA I've heard in ages.
Given that you mentioned it... For those unaware, completing all 300 levels of MK9's challenge tower (that could be quite difficult and time consuming) rewarded you with this:

In a Gamespot interview released a month before the game, Ed Boon said that NRS wanted to give players "the best reward that we could and I think people will be more than pleased with the result", which might be true if you're 12 years old.
While I don't really mind the designs in MK9, let's be honest, making the women look like strippers wasn't the pinnacle of creativity. Sonya didn't even have the excuse of being from some other exotic realm. Both MKX and MK11 have more creative/interesting designs and they actually managed realistic faces for the latest game.
Because, MK has always been known as the gore game, even back when MK1 came out in the arcades. Compare MK1 to literally any arcade/console/pc game at the time and it was jaw dropping how much gore was in it. It was so bad you had the government establish ESRB over it. The sexy bullshit was just a side addition vs the gore being the focus.
Man MK9 continues to be a profoundly ugly fucking game
You all know that I didn't specify which Mortal Kombat game I was talking about when I made that post, don't you? I agree that the MK9 designs are awful and uncreative. But as other people have said, Mortal Kombat 10 was way better. What I don't understand is why this latest game has made the step to almost completely cover up every single female character, while still allowing some male characters to go completely shirtless.
Like, there's a difference between sex appeal and just plain trashy. The reason Overwatch skins are so popular is that they're creative and fairly tasteful, and also equal opportunity. Mortal Kombat 9 was neither. I'm not defending that shit. I'm just not certain why the developer thought they had to take it several steps further. The only reason I suspected that it was intended to please puritans is that people in the usual places have been saying that every other fighting game needs to follow Mortal Kombat 11 if they want to "clean up their act."
I don't know man, I think MK 11 rides the line pretty well. It has some sexy skins, but I'd call them more tastefully sexy:

It might just be me, but I think they look fine while also being really well designed. You know, stuff you could take a picture with at a convention without your friends and family judging you.
And for the boys, I think I can guess the ones you're talking about. Shirtless Kano, shirtless Kung Lao, or just the loincloth boys (Baraka, Kotal). Now, I think it's just that, culturally, shirtless guys are seen as the "norm" of combat stuff. Not saying fighting games, but like, media in general where some kind of martial arts is involved. And you know, that makes sense, because that is the usual way human beings in competitive fights look; ever seen a UFC or boxing match? Have you noticed the one with guys are shirtless, and the one with girls have shirts similar to Sonya's? Designs around the board were brought down to normal levels, but because men just show more skin in real-lifem they happen to show more skin in the game.
Additionally, shirtless dudes are just culturally less seen as over-sexualization of the gender. Since the point of male characters showing their chest in action/male-oriented stuff is to show the characters strength, and power (you know, the usual power fantasy stuff), a male character showing their muscles like that is just seen as normal.
And as for the Baraka skin that's mostly a loincloth, well he's a monster, and the other monster Dvorah is just straigth up nude when you think about it
if you're talking about pre-mk9 shit than that stuffs even worse looking
NRS managing staff actually have nicknames for female employees, so anyone who buys the polygon article as truth or anything other than marketing is frankly an idiot.
No. I was talking about Mortal Kombat 10, and only 10.
No, guys you don't get it. Having them wear sexy, lingerie-esque outfits is MORE feminist! Removing them is actually counter progressive and implies sexuality is bad. I am very smart.
Dude, did you even read my latest post? Or the post before it? I was never defending the shit pre MK10 , and I've already apologized for derailing the thread.
I don't get it, Mortal Kombat back in the day was looked at negatively because of how violent it was, not because of what the female characters wore, nobody gave a shit about that because the gore was front and centre, now it's reversed except the gore is just as visceral but the outfits on women have been dialled back, why? The gore didn't get dialled back and people accepted it without issue it would seem, but the outfits are an issue? Piss off, apparently what someone is wearing is more of an issue than people getting bisected vertically, or insides getting ripped out through someone's mouth, nah the violence is perfectly fine, let's focus on covering women up because modern society.
Wow, is society changing? Like, are the people who grew up playing the video games that were deemed violent not seeing violent videogames as a weird or dangerous thing? I mean, that can't be, society is immutable, as everyone knows.
