• Indonesia's 2019 elections have killed over 270 electoral staff due to overwork

Ten days after Indonesia held the world's biggest single-day elections, more than 270 election staff have died, mostly of fatigue-related illnesses, an official says. The April 17 elections were the first time the country of 260 million people combined the presidential vote with national and regional parliamentary polls, with the aim of cutting costs. Voting was largely peaceful and was estimated to have drawn 80 per cent of the total 193 million voters, who each had to punch up to five ballot papers at one of more than 800,000 polling stations. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-04-28/indonesian-election-kills-270-due-to-overwork-related-illnesses/11052960
I wish there was some detail on what they mean by fatigue-related illness. I mean, does that include stuff like heart attacks and strokes? It feels like it'd be hard to differentiate between the cause of the deaths. Sad either way. The fact they counted that many ballots by hand is absolutely insane. 80% turnout too.
Ask not what your country can do for you, ask how you can die pointlessly for your country. Seriously though, this is a goddamn shame, I suppose these people must've been under threat of losing their livelihoods if they refused to keep working. Those who didn't die probably weren't paid a fair wage for their work, anyways. I hope that the dead and their families will find both justice and peace.
ya for all we know it could be anything frim mostly heatstroke from counting ballots in hot warehouses to anti democratic groups shooting people
