Star Wars isn't terrible but its about to become even more corporate trash than it ever would have under Lucas Films. Star Trek, in its hay-day, had meaning behind it, as well as waaay more content. Star Wars, the originals did have meaning as well. I'd say neither of them have survived in full spirits though even though there is still content being made of them. There will never be an era like TNG/DS9/VOY. That was peak Star Trek and it'll never return. Film and shows of today are just too dumbed down. The only hope we have of another peak Star Trek is in loving mimicry from fans like we're seeing now.
the orville is doing a pretty good job of that. hopefully fox will keep it going
the whole star wars vs star trek "debate" is so tiresome at this point
It goes into the war and the universe itself and how its empire vs rebels VS Humans VS Klingons VS Romulans VS Borg etcetc Its an interesting look at it but ultimately useless because Star Wars isn't scifi at all. Its Sci-Fantasy. You could replace literally everything with Tolkien tropes and the film would be the exact same thing outside of things being renamed. Instead of Jedi, just have Wizards, instead of space, have the sea. The 'debate' is just dumb because Star Wars plays directly into Good VS Evil and the heroes journey.
One of the best things about Knights of the Old Republic was how it spun The Good vs. Evil trope that is pretty much unmovable into something a little more complex. Basically Reaven sacrificed his own humanity and morality in an attempt to save the galaxy from an even greater evil. Then SWTOR kinda fucked that up
I don't like Star Trek because they pretend to be the pinnacle of human achievement while having fucked up ethics.
Given the state of the two franchises, I don't really see the point in this argument anymore. Star Trek pretty much lost what it was originally about between the JJ Abrams Movies and Discovery. The only real show that feels Star Trek now is the Orville. Star Wars has been dragged through the mud so much its been reduced to a corporate cash cow, and honestly it feels like the Sonic The Hedgehog of the film industry to me.
Let's not forget that Star Trek (for the most part) is a serialized TV show comprised of several seasons that each hold dozens of episodes. In comparison to 1-2 hours of every Star Wars film. Which gives Trek a big advantage over character and world building, plus having more focus on politics. Which is iirc what Lucas tried and somehow failed to do in the prequels (atleast in some people's eyes, don't quote me on that). The only thing that came close having that sorta "depth" would be that Clone wars animated show. P.S. I'm not saying it's impossible to implement these political or worldbuilding elements into movies, just that you are pretty much forced to compress them and inevitably cut out the "surplus" to fit into the film's time. I guess you can also count hiring writers and scenarists who know how to shape the story in the best way.
DS9 covers this at length, when they finally allowed the writers to stop using the formula™ after season three.
It’s also just not really the point of star wars. The political shit is an after thought. It’s really just a hero journey story. Which has its own deeper significance especially with how well laid out it is in the original trilogy.
That's kind of why I love it. Humans are the most cocky of all the races in the series, and the biggest wildcards. They pretty much make bullshit up as they go and then it works out in the end, regardless of how absolutely absurd it gets. There are a lot of episodes that have a really special place in my mind because they bring up interesting concepts, like "Who watches the watchers", where gods turn out to be mortal beings, just more advanced. Or in Darmok (aka Shaka, When the Walls Fell) where they have a very interesting look at the use of language and the importance of communication with one another. And then you have shit like this https://imgur.com/a/wpZ4w
I always thought Star Trek was 100% nerd shit that focused around a kid-like premise of "Lets band together to save the day!", I was so surprised after watching an episode of DS9 I ended up binge watching the first 3 seasons, I didn't expect them to even touch half of the subjects that they did.
Oranges are better than apples
It gets way better after season three. The EIC and Producer was given a mandate to stop having baylon 5 kick them in the ass every week in ratings sop they let the writers tell a much larger variety of stories and premises. 'In the Pale Moonlight' is one of the best episodes of television ever, much less Trek.
It's not scifi and you shouldn't pretend it is.
Any era that includes Insurrection is most definitely not peak Star Trek.
Star Trek is hard Sci-fi and Star Wars is a Space Opera, like @JewelCase said, its like comparing apples to oranges
Comparing them is pointless, pretty much the only thing they have in common is they're both set in space.
Also a cult following from nerds
