Is this just a general 'frat' thing in the US/North America? Maybe it's because this kind of culture isn't so widespread/open in universities over in the UK/Europe but this seems really trashy.
Excepts from Phi Psi Historical Archives - it's very cringeworthy to read through. Pathetic, tbh.
Jesus reading the minutes is fucked up. I know this is collage but can these people have a bit of self control? Apparently not, I mean]
What's the deal with the names always being some Greek letters? Sounds lame.
Who woulda thunk that frats are trash? I mean seriously does anything good come out of them?
And people wonder why I'll never ever ever join a frat or live in a frat house if-and-when I ever get to go to college...
The social elite use them for networking in the business world, so no.
Most fraternities are not social frats. They're usually community service focused frats. One of the largest is APO(Alpha Phi Omega); is a community service frat. The majority of frats are SOCIAL frats which are the partying kind. The biggest issue with frats/sororities is that they're gender separated ; I only know of 3 co-ed frats, one of which is mine, OLT.
I'm confused - most fraternities are not social frats. The majority of frats are SOCIAL frats.
Are you meaning differently when you say social?
A lot of them are like this wherever you go. It’s a deep rooted problem.
I'm on my phone; so sorry. Frats are dedicated to different things, Community Service, the are Work related ones(think Free Masons) and then the most culturally famous, the booze drinking, drug doing party kind. They're called social frats.
The vast majority of frats that exist today are not social; social make up a minority.
But god damn are they a loud minority.
They're loud because of movies romanticizing college. Its a big fake plot most movies sell to people.
For instance, the preported sexual freeness? Only 5% of college aged students take part. Of those, less than 1% actually enjoy that part of party life.
Anecdotally this has absolutely not been my experience, people in the dorms here are wild
Anecdotally on my end it holds up, I went to an engineering university so most people were cramming for exams.
There's actually a fairly large split in my frat because the people that just want to relax, drink and smoke til their numb come from the engineering uni while the party hards that stopped after 3 drinks were from a liberal arts focused college.
I think it’s mostly state schools that have the stereotypical frat partying culture. I never went to one but all my friends that did everytime I’d visit them I felt like I was in a college movie(none of them were in frats we just went to the parties to get free alcohol before going to a more artsy/nerd party).
It's a tradition that goes back to when Greek was still being taught as a required language in higher education in the early 1800s, as that's when Fraternities started. Typically most fraternities try to ascribe some sort of meaning to the letters as well, such as attaching them to the core values of the fraternity like how my fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, uses ΣΦE in place of our core values of Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love at times.
Apparently Fraternities claim to be derived from the practices of old Greek clans and other fraternal orders, hence why they also like to be called greek life organizations. Also the first modern fraternity in the US was named phi beta kappa, so it's something of a tradition.
Yeah, APO is great, we usually had APO members join OLT because some of our founders were APO members.
Though by the time was about to drop out, there was a lot of stupid political hubbub about "You can't be in a social frat, it makes us look bad hurburdur." It was really dumb because our frat had the reputation of being one of the safest places to party because we have members who don't drink and were very strict as DD.
Theres several facepunchers who are current members of a frat and they all swear by it. I guess it depends on whether or not you're a member participating in this shit or not that actually matters.
