God they're such fucking morons for changing the design of one of the most recognizable video game characters in the first place. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot from a marketing perspective, what a clueless move lol.
Extremely likely the artists in the studio were begging for a good design from the beginning, the producer/suits didn't listen and made theses awful choices, and now the same artists will do overtime to fix the shit imposed on them.This exact scenario has happened many times before, the people making the final calls are very often completely art illiterate.
The script is still fucked too.
Surely it's going to be incredibly hard for them to make any kind of significant change by this point without delaying the film.

Also I'm not really sure why people are so happy about this news. You do realize the same people that picked this design in the first place are going to be the ones deciding on the changes right?? Yea I can't wait for the new version to be even more horrific because these people are totally clueless lol. Bring on the buck teeth and googley eyes.
Not to mention the ridiculous crunch that's gonna be going down.

Honestly if all they did was replace the movie model with one from the games it would actually be a vast improvement.

every day you go into work and the director or the producers have some new demand about how sonic should have more realistic teeth or more muscled legs or coarser taint hair
you don't say anything, because you know that if you contradict them you'll just be replaced
you and tons of other people all spend months of your lives bringing this abomination to life because the people in charge are deranged cokeheads
and after all that, they come in one day and ask you to throw it all away and start over because "we never could have predicted that the audience reaction would be this negative"

Instead of only redesigning Sonic, I'd sooner advocate for either a dramatic overhaul of the entire movie and script (aka 100% start over from scratch), or just releasing it as is.
People aren't shitting on the movie only because of the horrific character design, they're shitting on it because it's a stereotypically aloof adaptation of video game source material from Hollywood, to the point of being downright comical. When I think of Sonic, I don't think of aliens or giant portal rings or military scientists or "Green Hills" being a local human town or Sonic having a human cop buddy or Jim Carrey as Dr. Eggman.
Like, seriously - typing that last sentence out sounds like somebody describing their acid trip. Paramount is Sony Animation a good run for their money with shitty adaptations (outside of Spiderverse).
Just do a crappy insert of a static sonic image that covers the current one frame by frame with shitty non cropped white corners and it will be perfect, and have him do a south park thing where his entire skull cracks open when he talks or have the square image jiggle up and down to indicate speech.
Even SEGA didn't like the design, this is 100% squarely on Paramount:

Very surprised they even adressed the feedback, i've never seen an hollywood production do this and straight up admit they messed up, change course mid production directly because of the fan's feedback.
Yeah, even if they fix the design, the script is still fucked bass ackwards.
Even fucking Sonic X had a better plot about Sonic & co. being teleported into the human world or whatever.
I knew this film was gonna be a mess, but I didn't anticipate it being THIS much of one.
