Yeah a lot of the problems with internal auditing is that the company will put pressure on delivering positive results to the team responsible, which is why you need an outside party that can't be influenced.

I can see this happening with the heated development of this project.

there's a lot more to it actually, the FAA did classified the system and concluded it had to be double redundant and were told it would only have a 0.6 degree correction, Boeing just didn't do any of that when they actually went to build the plane.
