The city of Minneapolis will pay a record $US20 million to the family of Australian woman Justine Damond Ruszczyk, who was fatally shot by a police officer when she approached his squad car after calling 911 to report a possible crime, city leaders announced on Friday.
Key points:
Justine Damond Ruszczyk was fatally shot after she called police to report a possible sexual assault in the alley behind her house
Former police officer Mohamed Noor was found guilty of murder and manslaughter in April
The mayor of city of Minneapolis said the payout will help the city "move forward"
Mayor Jacob Frey and city council members detailed the settlement just three days after a jury convicted Mohamed Noor of murder and manslaughter in the 2017 death of Damond Ruszczyk, who was unarmed.
The dual Australian-US citizen had called 911 to summon officers in the middle of the night to a possible rape in the alley behind her house.

Despite the triumph of justice, it's still sad thing, because this won't bring back a life.
Going to a police officers car to report a crime and coming out of it dead. How something like this can happen, ever, I have no idea.
And deaths are just the most extreme end of it. Think of all the cops who have restraint and toe the line and have spent a whole career consigning people to work in slave prisons.
That's the other end of it. Even beyond police kills, all the victimless crimes that people go to prison and suffer for.
Even a good cop sends a few good people to a bad fate. But that's an aside, really.
But a bad cop going to prison for murder? That's hanging yourself by your own rope. Imagine all the people who hate cops in prison, even more than pedophiles.
Oh wow all the people defending the cop because the victim is white and they feel like he should be acquitted because previous black victims had botched trials.
This is about justice not race, as all court cases should be. America is weird.
This really showed the corrupt ethics in the Minneapolis PD as a whole, switching off body cams, destruction of evidence and attempted character assassination.
These idiots will butt into anything like this and say vapid garbage like that. They don't give a damn about anyone that disagrees with them, regardless of context.
Not even worth caring tbh. Especially when they aren't even good as lolcows. They're just annoying twats.
A lot of people are arguing that the cop got prosecuted simply because he was a minority and the victim was white.
It's almost like regardless of what happens or who is prosecuted they will never be happy with the result.
They don't realize this trial not only convicted a cop, but it also questioned the police department's policies. It is a huge win when it comes to holding cops accountable. The case challenged the policy officers use what they believe to be reasonable force at that time. It basically says, the person can think it is reasonable force, but if the circumstances don't support it, then it is not. IE You can't just say you're scared and feared for your life.
