I guess Maximum Security's victory wasn't so secure after all...
What is with all the people standing to attention near the rail on the final stretch? Are those military uniforms? What the fuck?
No footage of the blocking?
Read the article?
Apparently twitter won't embed on firefox anymore?
The fuck did Mozilla do yesterday?
Huh, it hasn't been able to embed Twitter on Firefox for me for a few months now, I thought it was just my shitty mobile internet though.
I'd assume since I did this for a polo game out in California one time. They asked service members to come hold out a flag or something similar. As well stand around and look nice for the game itself. There's recruiters and personnel at a lot of professional sporting events in the US. Usually you'll see a Marine or two at sporting events simply because we have some of the best dress uniforms in existence.
As someone who isn't American, that just sounds so bizarre...
There's tons of US military personnel. Especially the national guard who actually provide some security for the event. But from what my google-fu says. They have military color guards come out and do shit.
Of course it's cruel. And the reason for the DQ is because he basically rode the horse like it was NASCAR and physically blocked a pass, which is a no no, because doing that causes too many broken legs
No question. Horses are some of the few animals that can have quite positive lives in many jobs, at least when comparing against farmed animals, but I've always found horse racing depressing and I'd never support it.
god america is ridiculous
I should also note that Fort Knox (where the US keeps its gold) is part of the Louisville area (where the derby is held), which is pretty populated with military bases due to this proximity. The locals tend to take pride in their connections to military culture, because a LOT of people around there are employed by the government in some fashion, or closely related to someone who is
The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved.
On almost every entrance to the city there's like a big ass tank next to the government buildings. Lots of redneck military types here.
at least they don't wear ridiculous hats

culture is helluva drug
don't get me wrong, the uk's and most of the world's traditions are very ridiculous, it's just america's obsession with military that rubs me the wrong way.
i don't intend to offend, it's just ridiculous to look at from an outsider point of view. i imagine and expect that americans feel the exact same about our royals lol
That makes me wonder, does other countries do the whole national anthem before sporting events thing?
We do that for some fuckin' reason
that's not so weird. the pledge of allegiance being recited in school every morning, though? kinda creepy
I just graduated with my Masters from FSU, and they did the pledge of allegiance at the beginning of the ceremony, before the anthem. I was really caught off guard by that.
