ICE is setting up a program to allow local police to conduct immigration arrests

Local jurisdictions that join the new program will be temporarily exempted from any local or state rules preventing them from cooperating in immigration arrests or detention, and allow them to execute arrest warrants issued by ICE, according to an agency release.

“Policies that limit cooperation with ICE undermine public safety, prevent the agency from executing its federally mandated mission and increase the risks for officers forced to make at-large arrests in unsecure locations,” Acting ICE Director Matthew Albence said in a statement.

“The [Warrant Service Officer] program will protect communities from criminal aliens who threaten vulnerable populations with violence, drugs and gang activity by allowing partner jurisdictions the flexibility to make immigration arrests in their jail or correctional facility.”

Forget the arbitrary "citizens." This is more reason for immigrants not to trust or ever try to cooperate with law enforcement when it comes to any sort of issue. This undermines the rule of law in these communities.

literally not their job. Local police are not trained to handle immigration law and they aren't paid or hired to enforce immigration law, its not their job.

and people love bitching about sanctuary cities as well but this is exactly what federalism is, the feds have their cops, the state has its cops, and the local municipality has their cops, they can work together but the fed has no right to appropriate the local cops for their own work under normal circumstances.

Yeah this is the big one here, the idea behind local police not handling immigration matters is to allow illegals to still call upon law enforcement for crime prevention. Take that away and those people will choose to fend for themselves, which leads to vigilantism or even criminal gangs. All of this will also happen under police radar since nobody trusts the police anymore.

Except for the part where under normal circumstances, sanctuary cities are explicitly refusing to work with The feds, hence the reason for said “bitching”.
