Rather paradoxical situation isn't it? The less apparent meaning we have the greater amount of meaning we acquire, however as the video mentions it is certainly not easy. We may indeed be an incredibly rare generation of humans who were given the opportunity to move through life with absolute freedom without being told to do much of anything, or atleast with the least quantity possible. We are generation null, the generation with no inherent inertia in any direction, placing upon us the responsibility of generating entirely new inertia for each subjective individual. Even though we are given an empty canvas we have the largest amount of space to paint in. Even if learning how to paint well is a massive pain in the ass.
I'm not sure you actually said anything in this post.

The video discussed common themes of hopelessness and meaninglessness, and how these concepts can be harnessed as a tool of self improvement and self definition instead of a cause of despair. The point Genkaz was trying to make is that people forget that seeing life as a blank canvas (no meaning) also gives the freedom to express yourself on said canvas however you would like (making your own meaning).
Yeah I watched the video, and I don't really agree with any of it despite falling squarely in the demographic of the "doomer". I'm not sure why this generation thinks its reasons for being depressed, lost, and nihilistic are something unique to our demographic. Every generation has these feelings, we aren't special.
What specifically do you not agree with? The world has always had glaring flaws. The advent of social media and mass communication has simply made them much more prevalent. The only thing making us "special" is the fact that its easy to be engulfed in a whole bunch of negativity. It doesn't make it any less valid of a reason. This wasn't supposed to be a contest of pain between generations, just a summary and analysis of a common cultural symbol (not sure if stereotype is the right way to describe it).
I am not really the largest fan of equalizing generations into being a homogenous blob of the same shit happening all over again. The previous generations definitely had distinctly different issues.
I was unclear in my original post, I disagree with the rationales of the "doomer" mentality. As much as this video is ultimately positive in its message, it still spends a huge portion of the video exhaustively explaining why we all feel so sad and hopeless. It is "because of the internet" and other wholly positive aspects of our life that we allegedly all feel this way. I should make it clear I take more issue with the promotion of the Doomer mentality in this video than the final message. I guess the root of my issues is the fine line between being de-stigmatizing mental health issues (which I am a huge advocate of) and complacently band wagoning behind a "woe is us" mentality. The doomer meme and mindset is very much the latter in my opinion, and borderlines on encouraging this generation be depressed because it is their destiny, and the destructive labeling anyone who is positive or not depressed as a "ignorant boomer" is ridiculous to me.
I wouldn't agree in calling it a promotion of the doomer mentality. It seems much more like a deconstruction of it. The video takes steps to specifically address why the Doomer mentality is not something to be embraced. It paralyzes personal development and can leave day to day living utterly stagnant. It represents a lack of balance in someone's personal life, much like the boomer mentality on the other side of this "spectrum." They are useful not because they are meant to be related to, but instead because they're tools for people who potentially see themselves in the doomers and boomers to be motivated in making active changes to their lives.
i am absolutely finished with this hopeless rhetoric the internet is pushing nowadays, it doesnt help anyone if you don't try to do anything about it, nothing will change, and thats all there is to it
this, i can't help but see this as an exaggeration on the same thoughts that made emo and scenekid culture. If you don't argue with that voice in your head that says its all worthless it will win.
Ditto which is why realization is only a step and not the end goal. To make your own meaning and purpose is to pursue your own definition of what makes you happy. From taking care of/supporting those you love most, pursuing your own hobbies and interests and organically growing relationships that you enjoy and see value in, its an outlet towards making the most of what each of us have. Thinking back to Maslow's Heirarchy Of Needs, if we fulfill our physiological, emotional and psychological needs, self-actualization (finding your own purpose and acting upon it) is in the end a positive force. The Doomer is just a stage, it shouldn't be an end. Yes the world is broken, and yes the world is full of contradictions, but that doesn't mean that we can't strive to find our own purpose and try to build a better world (or atleast our small piece of it).
Social media (Facebook especially) is the absolute worst offender of this. Every "meme" is basically this and it's getting tiring. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/230993/a3d991f6-063a-4216-873d-e74fddbfbc7f/image.png The less time I spend on that shit the happier I feel.
Hey dude, don't let it get to you too much. It's a shame you snipped all your posts over one criticism.
Wasn't just one criticism. the reason why I got the fuck out of the thread is because I have a problematic knack for getting into wildly long fruitless arguments with multiple people that are impossible for me to win without conceding or blatantly apologizing. And the more I keep going the more people I tend to piss off and infuriate. Due to my prediction of such an incident also endangering this thread I decided to take preliminary action and prevent the situation as early as possible.
I figure part of the reason why people feel so bad now is that most people feel replaceable. I mean, I'm working for a company which provides people to work for other companies. A few months ago I was working for a company that provides people to work for other companies which then send those people to work for other companies. I'm sure a lot of people would be feeling better if they were expecting to work for the same company their whole lives with promotions and raises, and got a nice pension at the end. If they knew at the end their experience and seniority would be valued, if they felt like they were working towards something. I just feel like I'm getting work squeezed out of me and will be discarded when I'm empty. Throughout my life, helping others was always what I found the most rewarding. The modern economy seems to discourage this, it feels like every man for himself.

Before opening the thread I thought that it was going to be about something like this: https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/409/092/8fd.jpg
I've never really looked into anything more than the boomer meme stuff, feels weird listening to the description of the doomer and the feelings its meant to protray basically outlining what my life has been for the past two or so years. Im trying to pull out and away from it but fuck its hard man.
God, I swear to hell anytime I watch this kind of shit I start getting into a mental conundrum to the point of headaches.
If you're not directly affected (at least at the moment) by what's going on in terms of world politics, getting off the internet for about a month will get you out of this mindset. (also, I'm pretty sure the "Boomer" meme is now more frequently used to describe retro gamers more than anything else)
I see a lot of retro gamers, even guys who aren't Baby Boomers calling themselves that.
Boomer in this case is late twenties to mid thirties.
What am I called if I'm a boomer, doomer, and bloomer all in one?
I think that's called bipolar
