https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/democrats-imposing-daily-contempt-fines-trump-officials-rep/story?id=62959503 Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said on Friday that House Democrats are considering fines on Trump administration officials in order to enforce contempt actions. He said Democrats could use Congress' “inherent contempt power" to try to force officials to obey subpoenas. “"Much as I like the visual of [throwing people in jail], I think it's far more practical to consider levying individual fines on the person — not the office — until they comply,” Schiff, a frequent target of personal attacks by President Donald Trump, told Axios' Mike Allen at a Friday morning newsmaker event. “You could fine someone $25,000 a day until they comply. You can do that. We're looking through the history and studying the law to make sure we're on solid ground." Congress hasn’t tried to enforce subpoenas through the “inherent contempt power” in nearly a century. However, due to the escalating tension between Congress and President Trump due to what Schiff said is the continued obstruction of Congress, he said the the House will have to “consider any remedy” to get information. The rarely-used doctrine allows Congress, instead of going to the courts, to arrest or jail those who do not abide by subpoena requests.
That would cost Trump a total of 15m until he leaves office, or 51m if he gets a second term. $15 million is about .5% of his 3.1 bn net worth.
In other words they want to pretend to be doing something without actually doing anything. In case anyone was unaware, the Democratic leadership don't give a fuck about the American people or their concerns and have no interest in doing the right thing for the country. They don't give a fuck about what Trump and his cronies do, they just want to be in a position to wield that power themselves.
um No? Like they definitely are doing something its just they have literally no support from half the house and the majority of the senate, the checks on executive power only work when congress as a whole works
$25,000 a day is nothing to sneeze at, that's well over $9 million a year
And not a single penny will ever get paid. Because what will Congress do if he doesn't pay it? Fines only matter if you have a way to compel them to be paid.
To add to this - if they're not handing over a file, what makes Congress think they'll hand over money?
UK Parliament just recently used it sergeant-at-arms for the first time in decades to forcibly seize documents from Facebook, you can do it too US!
Pretty sure it is more practical to throw them in jail. Stop screwing around and force the issue.
I fear the orange would go nuts and order Barr or the Secret Service to arrest Pelosi and the rest of the "opposition" leaders
Good. We need a tipping point, and most sane people thought that would be long, long ago. Let's actually light a fire under some asses so we can get things figured out once and for all.
