this restoration is a real "ship of theseus" problem because its taken out so much of the original it's effectively a wholly new object with none of the original's qualities
I do not like this restoration at all. Beyond grinding off the original paint which is a big no-no even if it's in bad shape, the new paint isn't remotely accurate in makeup or appearance. Very shoddy work.
That's a very sad red cross
I'd give him a pass because he seems just like a hobbyist and it was a helmet he found at a flea market, I don't think this is supposed to be displayed in a museum.
What would you do then? I mean the paint is flaking off and looks like shit.
I'll admit that making the top and rim white is bad and how the cross itself doesn't have any depth to it, it's gloss like the rest of it.
So every guy with a workshop is starting their own restoration channel after "my mechanics" showed there's a market for it?
I wouldn't touch it. It displayed fine as is. Items like this shouldn't be restored unless they have structural integrity concerns where stabilizing it requires it to be brought down to just the shell.
That's a fair point, I personally think a more accurate paint scheme and a pronounced Cross would've looked nicer, at the very least though, remove the rust.
