A place where we talk about about old-school games made back in ye olden days of the 90s and early 2000s, alongside new sequels to those games like DOOM (2016) and Quake Champions (RIP UT4). Also included in this list are of course new old-school inspired games like Dusk, Amid Evil and the upcoming Wrath: Aeon of Ruin. We also talk about cool mods for Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Unreal, etc. Have something to show? Post it here so we can gush about. Most information about these games and how to play them is provided here:   https://pastebin.com/pF7NiKXg Gallery of Infographics (Courtesy of 4chan's vr):  https://imgur.com/a/Y0h38yY Discord Channel:   https://discord.gg/9KAtWEu (I'm not doing the news thing anymore, don't have the time and I doubt anyone ever read it) Archives/News for maps & mods: Doom Engine: Cacowards / /idgames archive Build Engine: MSDN / RTCM Quake: Quaddicted Unreal: [1] [2] Previous threads: v9: https://forum.facepunch.com/games/bujvp/Retro-PC-Games-Megathread-v9-From-Dusk-Till-Doom/ v8: https://forum.facepunch.com/games/bszuu/Retro-FPS-Megathread-v8-Eternal-Edition/1/ v7: https://forum.facepunch.com/f/games/ukcx/Retro-FPS-Megathread-v7-Wolfenstein-2-runs-about-as-well-as-DOS-games/1/ v6: https://forum.facepunch.com/f/games/ujhx/DOOM-and-Retro-FPS-Megathread-v6-The-Distant-Sound-of-Trumpets/1/ v5: https://forum.facepunch.com/f/games/ujfa/DOOM-and-Retro-FPS-Megathread-v5-Rip-and-Tear/1/ v4: https://forum.facepunch.com/f/games/ujaj/Doom-and-Retro-FPS-Megathread-Ver-4-Not-this-nutcase-of-all-thread-starters/1/ v3: https://forum.facepunch.com/f/games/ujoi/Doom-and-Retro-FPS-Chat-V3-I-couldn-t-come-up-with-aAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA v2: https://forum.facepunch.com/games/uhwf/Doom-Series-V2-Knee-Deep-in-the-Thread/1/ v1: https://forum.facepunch.com/games/ucux/Doom-Series-Discussion-V1-Knee-Deep-in-the-Thread/1/
https://twitter.com/SVKaiser/status/1126922637475766272 Hopefully patch soon Despite the shortcomings, I've been having some fun with BFS. Even tried out some of the coop which was a blast (although crashy), I never got to play multiplayer for Blood back in ye olde times.
Isn't the whole problem about the source code of Blood being held by Warner Brothers or something that involved some burocracy? I remember seeing or reading something about that explained Atari didn't own the code at all, only the final product and the license or something along those lines
To be honest, if it's true that he recreated the game from scratch instead of using the official source code, it's a pretty good attempt. Some things do feel different, but i'm sure that with the help of the community he'll be able to change them.
My biggest gripe is the multiplayer, it's pretty clear that this aspect was rushed out the door with little care. You don't have any information available whatsoever in the server browser at the moment. You can't set a custom server name, can't see the latency to this server, can't see what map it's running, what gametype it is, how many players are in the server (it'll kick you out if it turns out to be full, but only after you already connected), can't see if the files differ, if it's running Cryptic Passage or regular Blood, the list goes on. For a supposed remaster, that's just shameful. Then there's sections in the Angel Script code like this: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/210790/3c48af4d-323f-4007-b4ac-241a3f37e18d/grafik.png Which is a function of the Voodoo Doll related to Multiplayer that was present in the original, but seems to have been forgotten about here prior to release. The executions in Bloodbath appear to trigger only very rarely to the point where they only show up once in a Blue Moon, and the kill lines the announcer is supposed to say when you frag someone is also missing. Then you have bugs like being able to kill yourself with crouch jumping in multiplayer, frequent crashes, half the sounds not playing at all in certain coop games, the wireframe mode being accessible in Deathmatch essentially giving you a limited wallhack -- it's just a flood of constant issues and I somehow doubt they'll fix them all in time before the management demands they move on to greener pastures.
New thread smell, good time to post this https://i.imgur.com/OziQO0h.jpg New Quake map jam X http://www.quaketastic.com/files/single_player/func_mapjamx.zip I found some time to make a map for this one, it's rather different from my usual Quake maps. Quite a few of them are so you guys might find this jam particularly interesting
The full Id Software Stadia GDC dev session has been released https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdz4b5psrhE Higher-quality footage of the previously released DOOM Eternal Stadia gameplay is at 40:33 A couple of Id Tech 7-related slides: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/214349/998e1506-e624-4512-b039-bb2c0daacec9/idtech7features.PNG Some of those removed lines of code includes dropping MegaTextures in favor of a more traditional texture streaming solution and downplaying OpenGL support in favor of Vulkan https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/214349/0c0eebe6-8f6e-4d69-99d3-19fb910a3d69/idtech7vulkan.PNG Vulkan is now used for not only just the game, but also development tools, allowing for more efficient content creation.

Have I ever mentioned that I absolutely hate Bethesda preventing even impressions of games from coming out before launch?
Thank christ
Oh shit they added in grunts for doom guy. Nice
It was an interesting concept to be sure, but Carmack was thinking too far ahead without considering the practicality. Too unoptimized, too excessive in space management, and too obnoxious to deal with when it came to handling their own games, much less preventing modding for various reasons.
gmanlives should feel embarrassed for saying it's a perfect remaster when it clearly isn't as civvie proved
https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/114636/129e3dc4-29ca-4c31-8a86-5dd433ec5f60/Capture.PNG I don't think he is.
Like Rage 2 comes out in a day and other than that new trailer and a roadmap, I have not heard anything about it
he sounds fat
I was gonna say something, until I watched the video, and I can actually see what you mean. It's like, super deep. Sounds almost like the old minecraft hit sound.
I prefer these grunts over him being perpetually mute.
Why does Doom guy's pain noises sound like Serious Sam?
Review copies were sent out last week and the embargo will lift later this morning. In the meantime, I've seen some people who got street-broken copies give out their impressions and it seems like the most consistent issues are: The story is nothing to write home It's not much of a looker on consoles Personally, I don't care about the first issue, and the latter may not even apply to the PC version (but who knows, really). I've also seen some say that the game is short (about 8-11 hours) but it seems like they just rushed through the main story without doing any of the side content, which you need to do in order to unlock all of the cool weapons and abilities. Besides, if the main quest-line isn't very long that could potentially be a good thing since it indicates that the game won't require massive grinding. Whatever though, it's best to wait for the professional reviews later today anyway.
The thing I am genuinely the most concerned with related to Rage 2 is that it will essentially just suffer from the same issues as the first game but worse; excellent gunplay and side abilities completely and thoroughly bogged down by spending way too long driving around doing fucking nothing interesting. I recall a gmanlives video some time ago where he previewed the game and said this was his main issue for him at the time. Given that's about as reliable as gmanlives gets but it's already not a good sign that the same issues from the first game would come back to bog the second one in previews.
With the higher quality video footage you can actually see now that the Cacodemon fireballs are colored the same way as in the original game. (rather than blue, as it looked when we first saw the footage) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ActUdxv-u6I I can hear the resemblance.
Mod tools Publicly available idStudio when?
Probably depends on how accessible they are, and if they use any third party tools that would need to be removed or licensed
According to reviews, apparently the open world of Rage 2 is literally empty. As in, no quests, no bonus missions, not even a proper reason to have one.
Hm, so nobody knows what actually happened to the source code of Blood?
From what I understood, it's not like it doesn't have quests, it actually does but they are not distributed evenly through the open world, resulting in areas which are pretty empty. Everyone's saying that the combat is as good as Doom 2016's though, so it might be worth it just for that.
Rage 1 was a mixed bag for me, what stuck out like a sore thumb was the juxtaposition of using vehicles and the game partially becoming a racing game at times. I inherently hate racing and using vehicles in FPS games. Give me just the shooter portions of RAGE 1 and 2 any day.
Some people claim Jace Hall and another original Monolith dev has it, Nightdive claims nobody at Atari has access to it, the problems aren't with WB either. Nobody is really certain and the whole situation is a damn mess.
