• Changing Jobs - Dilemma.

Hi all, Looking to see if someone had similar experiences and can suggest something. I am in middle of moving jobs (Signed new contract with new employer yesterday, could still back-out, but it would be extremely dick-ish move). Company A (Current/Previous): Role: Software & Integration Engineer. Pay: 45'000 (Yearly increase of about 7%). Benefits: Working From Home, 20 Sick Days, 21 Holidays, Flexible Hours. Small Company of 40 people. Short summary: Recently laid off 10 people with 0 notice, slowly losing existing clients. Today was announced there may be potential new clients (Negotiations still ongoing in early stage [still basically only introducing product and what it is to clients]) so still just words basically. There is expiry date: If we get no new clients - company will probably shut down/sell off assets in December. Very used to colleagues and also having really strong sense of guilt of quitting as I feel like I am abandoning ship like some sort of a rat. been feeling tense for past few months since those lay-offs and on thin ice all the time. Company B (New): Role: Lead Integration Engineer Pay: 45'000 (Guaranteed increase after 6 months probation). Benefits: Work from Home, 5 Sick days, 21 Holidays, Flexible Hours. Company is a subsidiary of large company of 1200 People. The parent company is doing extremely well. Short Summary: I will mentor 5 other developers and 2 interns as lead of integration team. 3 Minute drive to my home (Currently it's 20 min drive or 50 minute drive if in Rush hour). The company just received massive government project (Which they have been trying to get for past 3 years). Company A is offering (To stay): Pay: 55'000 (can probably negotiate even more) New Condition in Contract that I cannot be fired/laid-off without at least 3 months notice. Makes me feel really shitty leaving old job, kinda feels depressive as I am used to everybody there, although I know that everybody is looking for new job. Also by leaving - I am causing big hit on business operations as I was responsible for a lot of stuff that nobody else can do. The Company A tried convincing me to stay today and gave me till tomorrow to think, they shit talked about Company B (As they know them well because Company B has been pulling people from Company A previously). They said that I will be working on the new project/contract that company B just got for the entire time and it's probably not the best place for me with my skillset (I think this might've been some sort of manipulation attempt). Any experiences out there?
Move to your new position, don't worry about it. It sucks moving jobs and if you're in a position like yours where losing you would be detriment to the company they'll try and keep you any way they can but it's not worth it. If the company is going to shit then leave and don't look back - you won't regret it!
Well there are lots of pros and cons to either option, and it's hard today at whether or not Company A will continue to exist in the next few years at all. The pay increase and 3 month notice thing is a nice addition to your contract, but that won't matter much if the company dissolves. I guess what you need to ask yourself is, if you stayed with A and then come December they shut down, do you think you could find a comparable offer like that which B is offering, or better? If the answer is no, then it may be wise to transition now. If you think you could find a good offer should A shutdown, then it could be worth the substantial raise to stick it out longer.
Absolutely not. Because Company B actually is a sister company of A (They split apart in 2008) but they still share same technologies. I think it's the main reason I got it within a day.
Then go with company B I'd say
Wrt fleeing the ship, you don't get points for going down with it, so don't sweat that. As for your skills going with you, that would be a responsibility of the company to make sure they can fill in that skill gap (whether through a new hire, contractor, skill share with existing employees). The burden isn't on you to stay.
Personally, I'd leave Company A simply for laying folk off without notice, that type of scum fuckery shouldn't be tolerated. If you got a new job waiting in the wings, go for it.
Be wary of promises of sudden abnormally high wages (as it seems to be with company A now). Those are generally offered for positions that are urgently needed at that time, and can lead to one or a lot of the following: Simply not actually being paid that amount A lot of mandatory overtime to justify the wage or to compensate for missing personnel Bad blood among staff towards the employer if it's found out you're "that one guy" who has an abnormally larger pay than the rest all of a sudden, which leads to lower productivity and worse overall air in the company, which can contribute to the company going under even faster We've had staff leave over promises of higher pay, but a lot of the times we heard of them after it lead to one or many of the above. Not exactly even a similar industry, but the politics in a company work the same regardless.
Thanks all for suggestions.
Just FYI: I've rejected the counter offer. I was obligated to give 30 days notice but was only able to give 7, after 5 hour meeting of negotiations we came to agreement that I can finish off after 7 days on condition that I will finish any outstanding work (mostly document stuff I developed) in my spare time. Finally can relax now.
