These are both explicitly designed to be vehicles to contest Roe v. Wade in what is presumed to now be an evangelical-friendly conservative-stacked SCOTUS. Kavanaugh is proving to not be as reliably partisan as he was hoped to be, voting with the liberal-leaning bench on several important cases, so it's impossible to predict how the votes will fall.
dozens of people are dying daily from overdoses in my state but the only thing the legislature seems to agree on is abortion bans
That's because healthcare is a god given right until you're born, then fuck you pay a thousand dollars for a few stitches
even if that was true, we still don't provide healthcare to the fetal persons they claim to protect, 8-10 out of every 1000 babies dies in birth in alabama alone.
Kinda want to write a stern letter to my senator guaranteeing he'll lose the election if he doesn't vote in favor of what the people actually want.
Please do it.
Your letter would probably be tossed in the trash with all the receipts from mega political donors.
I'm frankly fearful that Kavanaugh is playing the long game with his tenure. Ruling with the liberal justices on occasion in order to establish a facade of impartiality. I wouldn't even be shocked if this was a strategy that was planned in secret before he even was confirmed to the supreme court.
Borealis pointed out some things to to me over discord:
"the Roe ruling was done that way because of an earlier case Griswold v. Connecticut
that case was the one to confirm that there is an actual right to privacy in the United States
so if you kill Roe you would also have to go after that one
Justice William O. Douglas, writing for the majority of the court, recognized the right to privacy, even though not enumerated in the Bill of Rights, is found in the "penumbras" and "emanations" of other constitutional protections
and if you get rid of Griswold, you get rid of Roe, gay marriage, gay sex being legal
and a host of other stuff"
"Thomas has openly called to look at New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254 (1964),
because trump is butthurt he can't sue the fake news for libel
Thomas wrote "If the Constitution does not require public figures to satisfy an actual-malice standard in state-law defamation suits, then neither should we".
this is the plan for decades
the Federalist Society's single goal is to nullify everything from the Warren court"
TLDR: A potential overturning of Roe V. Wade isn't the endgame. It's just the beginning. This is how they are going to go about establishing an american dictatorship run by theocrats and corporations. Thus, 2020 is looking to be the most important presidential election in the history of the country, and possibly the last. Because if things go badly, our democracy is likely finished.
Imagine if everyone was treated the way republicans pretend to care about babies. The world would be a much nicer place.
