I honestly feel like they didn't top 64 in the Mario series until Odyssey. Over 20 years later. Sunshine had so many problems and was super rushed, and Galaxy just failed to deliver on the promise of freedom that Mario 64 did (as did Sunshine for that matter). I feel like Odyssey was to Mario 64 what Breath of the Wild was for Zelda NES, taking a series back to its roots in the most amazing way possible.
Seeing Dunkey do Super Mario 64 is always a worry because in the past he typically would have it in the background while talking about heavy shit going on in his life.
To be fair the series started out pretty funny. It did get dark towards the end there though. He met Leah shortly after though and they're about to be married.
Personally holding out hope to see a reboot of the SM64 100% play through with the two of them
As someone who didn't grow up with Mario 64, I couldn't disagree more. Especially because I've never been much a fan of open ended level design. I enjoyed Odyssey, but the Mario Galaxy games are pretty much the pinnacle of linear, game-mechanic driven level design - which I've always preferred.
Given the circumstances which Super Mario 64 was made I don't even think it's possible to be topped. SM64 ushered in the 3d era. I might be being zoomer as fuck but mario galaxy 1 was the perfect game and I'll fuckin fight someone on that.
While I enjoy both the original Sm64 and the DS version immensely it is nowhere near the miracle of game design everybody makes it out to be (expecially with all the "collect red coins" and "collect x amount of this stuff" missions).
Mario 64 was about platforming and exploring, Odyssey is a collect-a-thon about possessing enemies and finding hidden shit.
Odyssey missed the mark entirely if it tried to go back to its roots, imo.
Wait so are you saying that Odyssey did not prominently feature platforming or exploring? Because that's an absolutely absurd thing to claim.
Just because levels are big doesn't make navigating them about platforming. A good half of the levels in Odyssey are painfully boring to navigate and keep actual platforming in isolated mini-game-like subsections like Sunshine did.
Most challenges that are in the main maps require you to possess enemies. If not, it's about finding random spots in the map to ground-pound, which isn't what I'd call exploring.
Sunshine was dope, I will fight any cretin that disputes otherwise. Up there with Luigi's Mansion (the latter is better, though).
My gripe with Odyssey is how self-referential and forcefully nostalgic it is.
Chock full of "hey remember this"-themed minigames, level sections and secrets around every corner. It almost feels "fake" or parodic in a way. And while some of the levels are visually stunning, I found the enemies to be unmemorable.
Something about M64's creative but simple enemy and level design makes it rock solid.
I've yet to play Sunshine & Galaxy though.
/old man yells at cloud
Sunshine runs at 25 fps in Europe. Makes it nearly unplayable by today's standards. Fight me
even on the DS which only had dpad controls, SM64 still felt freeing compared to other platformers i've played due to the level design and various moves mario had.
Getting an inferior version of the game due to region differences is your problem, not the base game.
Yeah, I was gonna say, Sunshine ran perfectly fine for me. Maybe my disc took pity on me because we were playing it in a country that doesn't have actual sunshine.
Wouldn't that actually be a problem from Nintendo?
Seems sorta mean to say its the consumer's fault the product is faulty.
It's more like although it's unfortunate that the game wasn't properly optimised for PAL it doesn't make the original game worse. Like saying that the surround sound in a movie sucks because you listened to a mono version of it, or something that's more applicable.
Sunshine uber allis
From googling, it seems like you can select between 50hz and 60hz display modes on the PAL version, so there's no problem.
Also I found the song "Jump Up, Super Star!" to be really bad. Like, if it played in a store or at a cafe or something on a loop I would walk out.
Just my opinion, of course
Yep, I believe most if not all GameCube games had PAL60 support.
I still can't believe I've never got around to playing this game.
I know I can emulate it but I feel a lot of N64 games require the "m" controller for the real experience.
This video almost got me teary eyed, this game still means so much to me.
I still prefer Sunshine, because I love how seamless the world is and how many missions are really creative, but I'll never forget the first time i've booted SM64DS with my shiny new NDS.
At some point i've also got a N64 so i've been able to play the original too, it was fun to spot the differences between the two versions.
Sunshine is still unplayable at 30 fps. Fight me
Super Mario 64 runs at 30 fps too though and I don't see any complaints about that.
