"My gender is not a costume" Christ
It's just a bit of fun. It was never intended to joke about transgender people.
This does not make me look like a pretty girl at all.
I seriously don't understand how these filters could possibly offend anyone. I mean, shit, if you're trans it lets you see a more confirmed version of yourself, where is the problem

Wow are you kidding me? Why is this rando transwoman's opinion treated and portrayed as if its represenative of trans people as a whole? Its just a silly app yo...
More outrage clicks for ABC
The worst thing about articles like this is that it fuels the "all trans issues are snowflake issues" narrative.
I think it's important to note that there isn't some sort of unified outcry. The article itself even quotes a positive reaction: "Elliott Wheeler, a 16-year-old high school student in Michigan, goes by the name Ellie. She says she hopes "this does help some people better recognize their gender."" Regardless, it's obvious snapchat had no foul intent with it. It's a curiosity, and a decently well put together one too. My sister showed me it and we toyed with it for a bit and I was kinda' impressed. It's not like it turns the subject into a stereotypical drag queen to point and laugh at or something.
Welcome to modern "news" where one person complaining somewhere on social media automatically means everybody and suddenly its everywhere.
Well it show you the ideal version of you, but not the "realistic" version of you Which can set up some unrealistic expectations and might make you sad/depressed
Thats Gross.
Trans people don't have an intellectual copyright on the concept of screwing with gender.
I think it only works when your opinion gains traction. Like getting a shiton of retweets that it gets picked up by agencies etc.
Honestly I bet the majority of trans people are probably happy to see people embracing (somewhat) gender fluidity or at least just playing with gender norms. A great way to combat bigotry is to get people to engage in your culture.
I mean...it's kinda been a joke in the trans community that this filter is "breaking" a lot of eggs. I think most of us know it's just harmless fun.
The other equally worst thing about this shit is that some companies will actually listen, and ruin the fun
tbh most trans people i know absolutely love these filters self included
For trans people using it, I can see it making dysphoria worse as the filter can produce an "idealized" version of oneself, rather than the reality of what one looks like. I'll admit as a trans girl seeing other people posting selfies with this filter, I am jealous - but that's a fault of my own and I'm not going to put down others for it because they're simply having some fun. I've seen some arguments that transphobic individuals are finding it to be a fun filter to use, which can be seen as hypocritical given their beliefs on trans people. This is only what I've heard though and haven't seen any evidence of open transphobes also using this filter. I have a curiosity for what it would make me look like, but I know I don't want to go down that route because then I'd impose stricter standards on what I should look like due to some app's filter beautifying my image. So my issues with the app are due to my own insecurities. My own problems aside, I don't have an issue with others using the filter. People are having fun with it and I haven't seen anything malicious come of it. Let people have some fun and share some laughs.
I just wanna ask for you to clarify weather or not you're talking about the Snapchat Filter here.
I mean, we are in the thread about the Snapchat filter. Why do you think I'm not talking about that?
What absolute babies
I wouldn't necessarily count a gender swapping Snapchat Filter as "embracing gender fluidity" nor would I ever say that using it counts as "Engaging in the culture of Trans people" But thats just my (a trans woman)'s opinion.
I don't think it's that absurd of a proposition. You don't see how people engaging in the concept of gender-swapping could perhaps help normalize the idea that someone isn't bad simply because they don't look like you expect them to based on your understandings of gender? It seems like you're getting caught up on the word "culture", which doesn't seem like a fruitful endeavor given that it's an entirely semantic argument.
If we didn't do something because it offended someone somewhere we'd all be sitting in empty rooms. If having a room and occupying space didn't offend some hippy
Bullshit outrage article. Literally no trans people give a shit about cis people using that filter.
You're not completely wrong I just dont think a snapchat filter is really going to do much of anything at all.
Reminds me of when faceapp had that race swap thing and some people raised a fuss so it got nuked.
Trans people don't own the concept of gender swaps any more than we own the concept of crying yourself to sleep at night
