An overwhelming majority of Americans oppose the idea of President Trump’s first term in the White House being extended by two years, according to a new survey. A new poll from The
University of Virginia Center for Politics conducted by Ipsos found 77 percent of respondents don’t think Trump should get an extra two years in office and do not think the 2020 election
should be delayed.
Trump recently retweeted evangelical leader and Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr., who suggested Trump’s first term should be extended due to “time stolen by this corrupt
failed coup,” referring to special counsel Robert Mueller’s 22-month investigation into Russia's election interference. White House officials reportedly said Trump's retweet suggesting he
should be given an additional two years in office was meant as a joke.
Respondents who identified as Republicans said they don’t think Trump’s first term should be extended by a 62 percent to 31 percent margin. Only 9 percent of respondents who
identified as Democrats said Trump’s term should be extended by two years.
Nearly 90 percent of respondents said the “peaceful handover of power after elections” and “both parties respecting the results of elections” are essential to the “healthy functioning of
American democracy.” Only 7 percent of respondents said Trump should ignore the results of the 2020 contest and stay in office if he loses.
the fact it's not 100%-0% for both questions is mindbogglingly depressing
Is there even a legitimate push for this?
What the fuck? This is the first I hear of this even be proposed, why is this being polled in the first place?
Why is this something anyone should be giving any thought to
P.Sure Trump shitposted out loud about deserving an extra two years because he feels the mueller probe 'stole' two years from him.
Only 9 percent of respondents who identified as Democrats said Trump’s term should be extended by two years.
Literally who
Don't forget that, within that very same tweet, he mentioned how he was the most productive president to have accomplished "so many things" despite the probe.
Thank fucking god. I was worried that 30% would follow him to the grave no matter what he did. Good to see people still have some fucking balls.
I wonder how many of them don't want it because it's fucking dumb and how many don't want it because of the precedent it sets.
I kind of get this feeling that if Trump legitimately started pushing for this openly and consistently, then a larger swath of Republicans would be in favor of it. We've seen similar things happen before and I honestly believe his supporters would completely reverse their opinion on any given issue at the drop of a hat if Trump comes out strongly on the topic. So far he's just pointed it out semi-seriously so the saner option mostly still prevails.
I wonder if Trump is aware of homophones, because this is both a bad precedent and a bad president
it has homo in it so probably not
Openly violating the Constitution is acceptable now?
only if you're not a democrat :downs:
As long as it isn't the second amendment, people will hoot and holler about dying to defend that. But the rest of it, who gives a fuck.
Not entirely true. You also have folks on the right claiming the 1st Amendment protects their right to say "faggots are sub-human!" and "6 million more!"
But you'll hear them argue when someone else says "Trans rights! America has no place for Nazis!" should be protected according to the same rules so they're not really interested in the 1st amendment except as a club only they can use.
