PHILADELPHIA (AP) — His party may be enraged by Donald Trump’s presidency, but Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden insisted Saturday that Democrats will not defeat the
Republican president if they pick an angry nominee.
Facing thousands of voters in his native Pennsylvania for the second time as a 2020 contender, the former vice president offered a call for bipartisan unity that seemed far more aimed
at a general election audience than the fiery Democratic activists most active in the presidential primary process. He acknowledged, however, that some believe Democrats should
nominate a candidate who can tap into their party’s anti-Trump anger.
“That’s what they are saying you have to do to win the Democratic nomination. Well, I don’t believe it,” Biden declared. “I believe Democrats want to unify this nation. That’s what the party’s
always been about. That’s what it’s always been about. Unity.”
iden’s moderate message highlights his chief advantage and chief liability in the early days of the nascent presidential contest, which has so far been defined by fierce resistance to
Trump on the left and equally aggressive vitriol on the right. Biden’s centrist approach may help him win over independents, but it threatens to alienate liberals who favor a more
aggressive approach in policy and personality to counter Trump’s turbulent presidency.
I mean, all agendas and plans aside, he's kinda got a point
The different political views really should get along better
How about fuck a rake
Oh, right, what the USA needs is bipartisanship with the party that loses immigrant kids and hates minorities.
Fuck you, Joe. You're an enlightened centrist meme come to life.
Yeah it worked out pretty well for pre-Nazi germany.
Yes.
As long as your opponent isn't actively violating what your nation stands for in both morals and constitutional matters.
There is no middle ground between sense and nonsense. The midway point between eating a bar of soap and not isn't half a bar of soap; it's not eating one to begin with because it's a stupid thing to do in the first place.
You cannot find common ground with people who reject the rule of law in favor of corruption and authoritarianism.
Listrn I'll be first in line on the fuck Biden train, but wow does this article do a poor job actually quoting him to make it look like ges saying something completely different.
Heres an article from The Hill
Our politics has become so mean, so petty, so negative, so partisan, so angry and so unproductive, so unproductive. Instead of debating our opponents, we demonize them. Instead of questioning judgement, we question their motives. Instead of listening, we shout. Instead of looking for solutions, we look to score political points,” he said.
“But no more. No more because this politics is pulling us apart. It’s ripping this country apart at the seams. Our politics today traffics in division, and our president is the divider in chief.”
“Let me ask you, are we a nation that believes there’s a moral equivalence between white supremacists, neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan and those with the courage to stand against them? No, we don’t, but Trump does. Are we a nation that believes in ripping children from the arms of their parents at the border? No, we don’t, but Trump does. Are we a nation that embraces dictators and tyrants like [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and [North Korean leader] Kim Jong Un? We don’t, but Trump does,”
"Rejects Democrats anger at Trump" seems to be a straight up lie lmao.
Damn my bad, AP is seen as one of the best sources around
I just want to express my dissapointment in that your post is quite reasoned and is how things should be, but the the comment immediately below yours.. perfectly sums up the problem in modern American political culture.
I'm not really saying that everyone should get along, I'm saying the people who aren't like massive assholes shouldn't be fighting over minor differences, and should stop squabbling and focus on more pressing issues
That's honestly the worst part. All the AP is doing here is fostering unrest between centrist Democrats and more left Democrats, just to get clicks, by omitting quotes and then directly lying about his position.
Again, fuck Biden, but attack his actual positions, AP, instead of lying to us to make us hate him for something he never inferred.
There's some posters on here who'd say exactly this same sentence but mean its complete opposite
No matter how liberal you are, you should know where to draw a line. Someone who 'tolerates' ideologies that refuse to tolerate others isn't a liberal, they're an idiot. And someone who extends an olive branch to a party that only cares about bipartisanship when they're in the minority is an idiot and a fool besides.
Give them no quarter. In 2020, take everything, and make sure the guilty are made to pay for their crimes. THAT is the only way forward.
Obama tried to play peacemaker. That allowed McConnell's six-year chokehold on Congress to form in the first place, leading to Trump.
Quit while you're ahead, Joe. Trump is the enemy, plain and simple.
I got into an argument with my own wife on this subject, because she referred to herself as a "centrist" in conversation and had this rote talking point about "compromise."
I told her she was ignorant on this matter and then she tried to hit me.
What I think she MEANT was that she was independent, but she didn't want to hear that from me.
But no... the childish notion of "we just all need to meet in the middle and give a little for the sake of everyone!" is utter horseshit when both sides of the divide are fucked, and in particular one is so draconian and insane that its demands CANNOT be met if we still have something we can pretend is a soul in our being.
Corporate Dems and Republicans are both too far right and too ensconced in corruption and a status quo that's great for the rich and shit for everyone else.
Compromise is the thing we need FAR less of.
Obama took a stab at health care and made good-faith surrenders right out the door, but the Republicans weren't having it. He let them argue him down to an utter right wing notion of a health care system, and after ALL OF THAT concession, how many Republican votes did the ACA get?
FUCKING ZERO.
The Republicans hated it anyway because they're rotten and partisan to the core, and then they spent the last decade and more attempting to turn back the clock.
There HAS to be a point where you stop negotiating like both sides are good faith actors and say what every American is thinking. "No, fuck this, fuck all of you. This is insane. YOU are insane. YOU will follow US back to sanity, or you'll be effectively locked out of politics. Because once the American people have a legitimate candidate fighting on THEIR behalf, you will have nothing to offer them, and you'll lose every time.
That's why the road to ranked choice voting is going to be grueling, because neither party will surrender that. It represents their stranglehold, in which you either vote for one of the two worst flunkies or waste your voice, so nothing changes. To allow a more representative voting system would give independents unprecedented power, and independent in the United States almost always means someone WAY far left off the US spectrum who HATES both parties.
Open that door and corporatism dies a slow, inevitable death, and they know that. Otherwise, Bernie Sanders wouldn't bother with usurping the Democratic nomination, he'd wade right into the General as the independent he actually is. Ranked, you'd either have Bernie voters outright, Democrats who vote Bernie as a second choice, or the potential Republican who likes the cut of Bernie's jib and puts him as second because he hates the Democrat.
Suddenly you can't take voters hostage by making them hold their nose and pick the lesser of two evils. You have to give them what they actually want, or they'll put you at the bottom of the list where you belong.
Yeah, he literally said that during this speech.
You put that incredibly well. Cultivate that ability as a writer, it's a gift.
Trump is an evil man but fanning flames of contempt towards eachother is just going to drive a stake between the left and right in America.
Driving people further into extremes is how the USA got in this position.
I'm willing to be the majority of Trump supporters aren't bad people, they are misinformed.
Fixing this sort of divergence to extremes will either make or break the USA imo
Evidently they can whenever it pleases their corporate masters.
Haha, thanks. I'm a regular Secular Talk viewer, but otherwise I primarily write fanfiction.
But the whole voting thing really should be more obvious to people. I saw a video recently about Jill Stein, and GOD is she delusional. She was talking about how Bernie was being lost to the dark side and making a mistake by trying to infiltrate the Democrats, because NATURALLY he'd be subtly corrupted by them.
Damn it, Jill, I know you're principled, but how can you be so freaking clueless? You were a spoiler candidate in 2016. You had ZERO chance of winning as an independent because of the fptp system. Like it or not, the parties have rigged it so you HAVE to go through them to win the presidency, and Bernie understands that means he has to take the Dems over from within and play by their rules. It's shitty and wrong, but we have to beat them at their own game before we can change the rules. This is the kind of pragmatism that's necessary. Not the "Green New Deal? Medicare for All? Free College? Poppycock and balderdash Mary Poppins, be realistic!" 'pragmatism,' but the kind that can actually use a fucking calculator.

The duality of man
Which video, where she supposedly acting "delusional" like the other more cynical left-wing anti-Democrat partisan folk are, like Jimmy Dore? Just because like those folk, have their own 'normal' ideological interpretation of why the Independent-turn-Democrat by force Bernie is working for a faux lazy center-right politician like Hillary, in the 2016 election.
She was (but still current as a member) Green Party presidential candidate for two times (2012 and 16). But it does help their party to gain ballot access for few states, including North Carolina were I still living at, which was beneficial for their party and people who like their party, along is strongly cynical and hating with the two ancient major parties.
I'd agree with you, but Trump and his cult of personality aren't a bit different. We have a president who literally, not verbaitum, said white nationalist protesters aren't bad.
You can support some of Trump's policies, the Republican party, and it's values, but if you purely support Trump directly as a person you're supporting someone who's supporting Nazis.
AP used to be the best source. It's often the original citation when news companies push out media, and they're the ones who poll people at elections
But they're becoming awful. See: Female teacher rapes student, AP calls it an "encounter"
...What the HELL are you talking about? I can honestly only parse bits and pieces of this ramble.
If I could find the video I'd post it, but a YouTube search isn't narrowing it down.
But yes, running as an independent FOR THE PRESIDENCY, to be clear, is an utter waste of time, and with the current system you're not going to do anything better than rob votes from the Democratic candidate. Them's the brakes, I'm sorry. Until we get ranked choice voting installed, nothing else is realistic.
And yes, Bernie worked his ass off for Hillary in 2016 after losing the candidacy. Because running independent would have split the vote, and Bernie knew full well that a Trump presidency was to be avoided at ALL COSTS. So he shelved his pride and did the next best thing he could possibly do for the American people: try to get Hillary elected instead of Trump.
Anything less would have been shortsighted. Are you going to argue otherwise? Because I'm not calling Jill a bad person, just deluded if she thinks she can win outside the two main parties with the system in place.
Good to found that video... but really dude, she in a typical political interview with a unknown YouTuber to stating her opinion/interpretation about him working for Hillary in that time.
Also if you turn on the subtitle on video, what she clearly meant -if your video is having correct subtitles, for him and the viewers by best, without leashing your accidentally portraying her as a stereotypical (ex-)third party candidate?
Along also for the first sentence, this is a not perfect discussion forum site, not a literally a public place where I talking you IRL. So, unironically sounded to me is literally are you writing about instead.
After listening to this podcast on someone's recommendation here, I think that he might have a point, but perhaps not in the way he's saying
I think of it more like "You don't have to agree with the other side's politics, but don't let political differences get in the way of finding some common ground where you can."
Robert Evans goes into this concept a lot on the episode titled "How to Save America"

I can't imagine a more surface-level analysis of the problems with our political culture lmao. If your house was on fire you'd blame it on the melting ice cream. Literally anyone can make cheap calls for unity and go "oh there you go again dividing us" when called out for their shit, it's entirely meaningless and self-serving. Biden's idea of "unity" is nothing like mine, he can go fuck himself with a rake.
