• Tanya Plibersek, Chris Bowen, Anthony Albonese to contest Aust. Labor leadership

At least three candidates have emerged as possible leaders for the Labor Party following the Opposition's shock federal election loss. Anthony Albanese is the first to officially enter the race, while current deputy Tanya Plibersek has confirmed she is considering seeking the leadership. "I believe I'm the best person to lead Labor back into government," Mr Albanese said. "We've lost three elections in a row. That has an impact on those Australians who rely upon us to improve their education, to look after their healthcare, to build public transport infrastructure." Ms Plibersek has been the deputy leader for six years and held the foreign affairs, and more recently, education portfolios. The Sydney MP confirmed early on Sunday morning she was a likely contender for the leadership. "I'll talk to my colleagues today but, of course, I'm considering it," Ms Plibersek told Insiders. Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen, the architect of Labor's contentious tax plans, is also considering running. Incumbent Bill Shorten last night announced he would not be recontesting the leadership after six years at the helm. Labor had started election day expecting to seize victory, but by 11:30pm, Mr Shorten had conceded victory to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who defied polls and expectations in getting the Coalition re-elected. Replacing Mr Shorten is likely to be a lengthy process because of the rules that govern leadership elections. Mr Albanese was deputy prime minister when Kevin Rudd briefly returned to the prime ministership in 2013. He has held the infrastructure portfolio for Labor in Opposition. "What you see is what you get with me, for better or worse," Mr Albanese said. https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2019-05-19/tanya-plibersek-anthony-albanese-labor-party-leadership/11127296 Title is slightly misleading, but character limits; so far, only Anthony Albanese is committed, the rest are still considering it. Tony Burke may also throw his hat in the ring. Tanya Plibersek is currently the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, and held Ministerial positions in the previous Labor government. She is from the party’s Socialist Left faction. Anthony Albanese is the current Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, and was briefly Deputy Prime Minister during the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd years. He is also from the Socialist Left faction. Chris Bowen is the current Shadow Treasurer, largely responsible for crafting the tax reforms which Labor took to the recent election, and of which are partially blamed for Labor’s surprise loss. Chris is from the party’s right-leaning faction. Tony Burke is the current Manager of Opposition Business; the shadow counterpart to the Leader of the House (outgoing Christopher Pyne). Tony, like Chris, is from the party’s right-leaning faction. For reference, Kevin Rudd and Bill Shorten were both from the right-leaning faction. It is almost customary for the Labor Party leader to be from the right, and the deputy leader to be from the left. The exception to this was former PM Julia Gillard, who was from the left.
So what do we think boys? Who has the best chance to win, and to win the next election.
Too early to tell. I think any of the four will make a decent leader of the opposition. Right now, Labor need to do a bit of soul searching.
friendlyjordies
Yeah, figure out where they fucked up, then select a leader to fix that.
Speaking of which. According to his friend, He's lost it. https://youtu.be/B3LpfY4qsyY Hopefully he doesn't go to far off the deep end. Either way, next video of his should be interesting.
Albonese and Chris Bowen have the same problem that Shorten does. God, Labor doesn't have many good leader candidates. Then again we have fucking scomo as PM lmao
they need to flush out the entire party of this establishment rot. labor left insurgency time
Uh what? Labor left is part of the establishment, and has some of the top candidates for the new leader.
I liked Chris Bowens policies but of course if he is the opposition leader we all know what the attack on labour will be about. Tanya looks like a good choice just from an image perspective, which is a terrible thing to say because we shouldn't be judging people on their looks, but fuck it happened bad for Shorten so that needs to be countered.
I don't blame him one bit. Like jesus christ this country has no fucking hope. Our future is fucked thanks to the Liberals, I will never have a sustainable future, a sustainable income. And even if I do, the fucking world will be burning, my hometown is on level 5 Drought, the fucking Dams are drying up faster than they can setup shit to avoid it getting worse. I can't fucking have kids because if I do then I am dooming themselves to hell on Earth. There is no one to blame but the fucking Media, Rupert Murdoch, the fucking liberals and the idiot population of this god damn country because all they think about the government is that "OLD PRIME MINISTER BAD, NEW PRIME MINISTER GOOD" even tho it's the same fucking party. they fucking gave shit to labour for pulling this shit but noo liberals are okay because we changed prime minister for the 5th fucking time in the last 9 years. 2021 we'll have a new prime minister just you fucking watch there is no hope for this fucking country
This is so melodramatic. Also scare campaigns based on lies and bullshit were utilized by labor as well. LNP won't be terrible, you'll just have to wait for labor to get their shit together to win in another couple of years.
While I think Xonax is blowing Australia's contribution to climate change out of proportion (Let's face it, it comes down to the US, Europe and China), the liberals are gonna be bad for Australian energy prices and the economy is far more likely to crash under them.
friendlyjordies can attribute some of the blame to himself. His condescending attitude and clear bias towards Labor probably put off people from voting for Labor. It’s just like Bob Brown’s anti-Adani convoy, which ironically helped hand Queensland to the Coalition on a silver platter.
I doubt that, the people who watch jordies tend to be people more sympathetic to Labour and the Australian left anyway. He's still a fairly small youtuber and I'd imagine most people who would vote Liberal wouldn't even watch his videos.
https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2019-05-20/tanya-plibersek-rules-out-running-for-labor-leadership/11130940 Tanya Plibersek has ruled out the leadership. As has Tony Burke. Anthony Albanese looks to be the most likely choice of leader.
Oh yeah so Chris Bowen, Jim Chalmers and Joel Fitzy have each stated they won’t contest the leadership. So Anthony Albanese pretty much has this in the bag.
