NEW YORK (Reuters) - Alphabet Inc’s Google has suspended business with Huawei that requires the transfer of hardware and software products except those covered by open source licenses, a source close to the matter told Reuters on Sunday, in a blow to the Chinese technology company that the U.S. government has sought to blacklist around the world.
Forgot the source, mate.
I added it. I was on mobile in a hurry and got excited.
It's a good thing that China is communist because that means Trump will actually acknowledge that they're a threat
Funny how company that spies attacks another for spying.
So this technically means they won't get new versions of Android, right? But they already have the current version? Isn't there a way for bone stock Android to get updates without OEM permissions? What stops them from doing that for updates?
Only America is allowed to get away with corporate and deep state surveillance /s
I think they won't be able to use google play services on their phones. Which is basically equal to not being able to run 90% of android software because even basic stuff like location handling is inside of play services.
Well this is absolutely retarded. So this is the only way US can beat Huawei? By ruining a service for millions and millions of users all over the world. Where's the damn backdoors that they're insisting about. Where are the dangerous equipment? Why not blacklist the specific branches that works with telecom? Why not ban specific equipment?
This is a major reversal since Google used to sell Huawei phones, and Android is the main reason the Chinese smartphone market exists.
Well fucking shit, I got a P30 just a few weeks ago, and I'm not the only one around here We'll see how this plays out in Europe, I really really hope it won't come to Huawei deploying their own last-resort OS
There is no need for panic for owners of both current and future phones. I don't think google will block play services on any current phones and you can always install them manually on future phones.
seems like they are blacklisting equipment that has been proven to communicate with chinese services/servers without users consent by preventing us data from being sent to them
Still, if this really goes through then current owners wont be getting the expected OS and security updates for the next 2-3 years, which is really not cool
Its actually unclear if they will have to pull the complete play store and other google apps. From what I can gather it will include the Play Store and other google apps. https://twitter.com/tomwarren/status/1130223836660686848 I really hope its "just" updates and stuff, actually loosing access to play store and google apps would be brutal and I own a Huawei P8 Lite 2017...
Huawei doesn't have unlockable bootloaders, you won't be able to sideload google services unless there's some kind of publicized exploit for it.
It's Huawei, you weren't going to get those updates anyway.
Bad time to own a Huawei phone. The new ones all have locked bootloaders so that means no more updates ever for you.
I can't open them and look into what I really get on my older Huawei but I know that it it at least says that I get the latest android security updates, latest one was January on my old P8 Lite 2017. So I'm not sure this is correct, unless you imply that Huawei leaves security holes in with fake security updates.
I got updated to Android 9 on my Honor 8X some time ago, and the security updates happen on a pretty regular basis.
Security updates are monthly. Unless yours says May 2019 you are out of date.
Intel and Qualcomm reportedly join Google in Huawei ban Holy fucking OUCH Hope you boys like Mediatech.
Here comes the impetus for the third mobile OS in the world...
Huawei already used their own processors ala Apple and Samsung though?
Maybe we should block windows 10 in Europe then ? I'm pretty sure at one point it was sending data back to its own server without my agreement. Not saying that Huwai is not in the wrong. But I'm under the impression that the those procedures are more to remove a big competitor from the American market than protect the american customers.
They will still be able to provide operating system updates, Google can't restrict their access to AOSP and unless Google was building their updates for them they should be able to produce Android updates for their devices with no issues going forward.
ChinOS, the greatest OS in the world.
Hello comrade, have you heard the good news of Red Star OS?
Bullshit. Even their Honor phones receive updates for 24 months, and their release plan would have made them the first manufacturer after Google to update their devices to Android Q.
Because business, lobbying etc. Later in the future narrative will shift into Russian troll propaganda being the real culprit here.
