Thousands of pounds worth of model railway exhibits have been destroyed in an act of "total wanton destruction".
Its chairman Peter Davies, 70, said exhibits were smashed, thrown around and stamped on, including a locomotive unit worth about £8,500.
"Models that were made over years were trodden on and thrown around. It's a total wanton destruction of the highest order.
"I've never experienced anything like it. A hurricane would have done less damage."

it was probably school kids
This deserves capitol punishment.
Force the kids to remake the trains as community service.
Who the fuck left the whole exhibition unguarded? That stuff is expensive
Force them to build the trains full scale!
Who would have guessed it would be targeted though?
I don't understand why anyone would do this. It has never crossed my mind to destroy something that doesn't belong to me. They teach this in school.
I mean, a model worth 8500 GBP could tempt thiefs, as well.
For an academy that goes up through the first six years of a child's curriculum, that is a hell of a lot of destruction for kids to commit. They had to be in there for a while, flip tables, smash shit left and right. Granted, "youths" is intentionally vague so they may not even be students and were just some punks looking for stealing some things to pawn while thrashing everything else, but jesus christ. What kind of person breaks into a school and destroys all of this?
A shitbag.
That's because you are a good, decent person.
Unfortunately, my time in school introduced me to a select few crazed assholes and full blown wack-o-loons.
The sooner they're dealt with, the better.
That's heartwrenching. A lot of these models would have taken years or decades to get just right. Those poor modelers.
Its in a school which is supposed to be secure. Its not like they left them outside.
What do people think when they do shit like this that they're going to get a high five
Anything open to the public will be ruined. Either by people who have a Fuck You It's Not My Job mentality, or by shitty people who vandalize. People who like to throw coins at sand castles and shit
Honestly while I wouldn't expect a couple douchebags to just randomly smash the stuff, I definitely would think there should be security to prevent thefts. As was mentioned, some of these units are seriously valuable.
As someone who builds scale models (not trains), this like, makes me sick to the stomach
I hope the people who trashed this meetup get their houses stepped on like a tiny scale model, how ironic would that be
Man this makes me so sad. My dad's into model trains, and he and everyone we've met through the hobby are such nice, genuine, passionate people.
So infuriating that people could do this man.
The thing is that this wasn't simply some sort of "defenseless thing for anyone to access", it was breaking into the school illegally complete with triggering the silent alarm at 4 in the morning. Even worse, judging by other coverage, it was more than vandalizing the trains and tables as they tore up an electrical cable and tried shooting hoops with some of the stuff lying around, models included. This isn't something that seems spur of the moment, especially if they happened to also be students there.
Just as well, considering a lot of people apparently came from abroad to see the convention, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a group of jackasses that aren't from around the area.
Arrests have been made: Four youths arrested after thousands of pounds of damage forces ..
As someone into the scale modeling hobby.. This is disgusting. It's hard to put a price on this kind of stuff because so much of it is completely hand-made from scratch.
I'm guessing the vandals parents don't care either. So much work must of gone into this the price is probably irrelevant to the creators.
"lmao look at all this stupid nerd shit"
The BBC piece already said they were arrested and released on conditional bail.
Man... As kids we could have just put a toy cow on the rails or something stupid like that, not this shit
This feels like the beginning of an episode of the Twilight Zone. Like, these kids are going to be met with some sort of horrible model railroad-themed fate.
I am a model railroader and it all but affirms that I'm never ever ever ever going to display my railway in person. I'll share it with others via youtube instead.
Someone should lure the vandals into a second fake event and then suddenly jump out and start to beat their asses while being dressed in thomas the tank engine costumes.
care to share a link to your channel? i love seeing other people's stuff and getting inspiration for my own :V
