Well that's a headline I didn't expect to read any time in my lifetime. It's going to be very interesting to see how this affects Mexican cartels, hopefully it plays out fairly peacefully but I feel like there's a good chance they won't be happy about this. I have to say though, I'm very impressed with Mexico for taking the initiative and admitting that our current polices are not working and we need to try new approaches.
If anyone has a better source, I'd like to read it. The press release was just released earlier today and it doesn't seem like it's hit any major news outlets yet.
Doubt it will do much. Most of the Cartel revenue probably comes from selling into the US.
It might reduce Cartel-Government fighting, maybe.
I do think it's worthwhile to keep people out of prison and for reducing violence, even if cartels are still gonna make bank selling to the US.
No legal company is going to do what the cartels do.
I don't know enough about sociology to know if this is feasible, but maybe this might cause the cartels to evolve into legitimate businesses over a long period of time?
Just because drugs are now legal doesn't mean the cartels are suddenly legitimate companies. You're nuts if you think they're going to stop knocking each other off, lay down arms and begin paying taxes.
I never said the cartels are going to be that. The legal companies that take over won't do that, and the cartels aren't going to make a much if anything, and will loose a lot of power.
Holy fucking shit I
I'll be honest, I was really expecting a Badage Boys here. Just... wow I mean.. my god I...
To be clear, I think this is an amazing thing
That is a pretty surprising decision, to be honest.
I hope it can do some good tho
Or the cartels start intimidating, sabotaging or outright murdering them legit companies.
legal companies assumedly wouldn't be legally allowed to export to their biggest market, the US
The most likely outcome for this in my mind is the cartels pressuring the legitimate companies into legally producing their supply which they then illegally sell to the US. That is if the "legitimate companies" aren't run by the cartels in the first place.
Yeah, no. Drugs being legal in Mexico will have no bearing on the cash they're raking in in the US.
Yeah I mean it's not like increased border security is a priority for our current commander in chief.
Has to be good for something, I mean
the drugs are still going to be defacto illegal since there's still treaties preventing them from exporting and nobody else who will import them, much less let them transport them, which will severely limit any corporate investment.
And who says the cartels won't just massacre any legal company that starts cutting into their profit?
Nothing, but this is going to be the end of them. Not going to say that the next few years aren't going to be as violent as they are now. Alcohol prohibition in the US ended and made the mob lose power, I don't see why this wouldn't be the same at all.
ah, capitalism. the solution to everything.
