Fair enough because of suicide That idea of taking your rifle home with you just because you're in the militia is an incredibly stupid idea
Don't they already store the ammo in a specific government place anyway? I don't see why they couldn't store their rifles there as well.
Yep. They had to change the law so you could take your rifle but not your ammunition home. Before that I think there were wayyy more suicides and domestic murders.
The only reason they really approved this was because the EU was threatening to boot them from the Schengen Area. Such asinine bullshit.
Well it's not overreach. Why should I tolerate freedom of circulation for people who potentially carry a weapon when no one else in schengen gets to? It's either everyone gets it or no one. I appreciate switzerland complying to EU rules as a «guest», for sure. Now, do I need to make an analogy comparing the swiss to brown people so you understand the logic of cracking down on foreign weapons or are we in the clear?
You are talking to someone who openly asks for people to smuggle collector firearms from Syria. My view is that unless you are in a fully federalized/republic union, you should be allowed to have your own laws. The fact that Brussels openly threatened to attack the Swiss economically like this is some next level BS.
You should so someone, like me, can point out a frequent irony where the same people who decry imperialism see integration and regulation as a civilizing mission.
The Swiss are no choir boys, Joey. There's no attack on switzerland but through the piggy-bank-hole. It's probably not going to help anything but I have to support it on a theoretical level; being part of schengen ain't free. Maybe when Europe gets its collective shit together as far as terrorism prevention goes, we can look into sensible gun ownership for everyone involved. I don't hate guns either, I just think exceptions undermine the collective rule.
You're acting like the Swiss don't have their own interpretation of what the Schengen area entails with specific demands and perks on their end as well. It's a two-way street. If you want to benefit from belonging to a free trade area, you have to abide by certain conditions in return. Otherwise, you'll have to go through the proper channels like every other non-EU country. It's their choice.
I might be wrong but it doesn't seem like the new rules would have much of an effect since switzerland already had some strict gun regulations in place like a points system that limits how many guns you can own at any one time
they're perfectly entitled to restrict use of firearms if they themselves vote to restrict it lol
That's not how it works Joey. If the Swiss want to be a part of the Schengen area they have to manage the wants and needs of other nations on them inside the Schengen area as well. Nations do not exist in a vacuum. The Swiss would have every right to leave the Schengen area if they want to, but they don't, and they don't have the irreverence of firearms that some nations do and so are willing to sacrifice them for the greater good of both themselves and everyone else.
I know the "MUH GUNZ" is an unflattering US stereotype but please sit down and think for a moment that citizens of a nation that isn't America may actually have a differing opinion on firearms control and they have decided that better integration with Europe is more important than having easier access to a wider variety of firearms.
Thing is we might not have done so if there wasn't the threat hovering over our heads saying "if you don't vote yes you're gonna get fucked over by the EU".
If you want more of a say on such issues you can always apply for full EU membership. You're not entitled to getting all of the benefits of belonging to a free trade zone without any of the drawbacks, though. The fact that you still enforce customs at your borders when free movement is supposed to be part and parcel of the Schengen area should be enough of an indication that you're getting privileged treatment already. I don't think you really are in a position to complain.
