The real question: Can you add a second HDD?
I'm surprised it doesn't work honestly, considering it has all the contacts still.
I mean, he clearly stated the disc drive has to be mated with the motherboard, so you could plug in all the of Xbox One drives in the world into it, and none of them would work, because they aren't paired
I know, I'm surprised that's a thing because it means repairing broken disc drive isn't as easy as buying a replacement.
That's been par for the course with consoles for a while now, and for exactly that reason. Console manufactures don't want you repairing or modifying things unless it's through their closed ecosystems. Which in my eyes is a pretty good reason to avoid consoles on its own.
It's mostly about DRM. It's still fairly involved to rip PS3 and Xbox 360 games without the console and married disk/mobo pairs.
