https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_uOSImPSi8&feature=youtu.be Pretty funny how they're calm about it. I could only imagine all the fearmongering if this happened today.
the Soviets made my baby gay
That comment about "surely anti nuclear groups will jump on this saying, aha I told you so" sure was correct, I don't think theres a single nuclear discussion these days that someone doesn't try and use the soviets terrible reactor design as an anti nuclear point.
The main concern with nuclear reactors is making them safe from all kinds of dangers including accidents, incompetence, and deliberate sabotage. As long as extensive tests have been done to ensure that there is pretty much nothing you can do to make it weaponized or destructive in any reasonable frame of time then there should be no reason not to use them. In essence nuclear reactors should be tested in exactly the same way as space components, basing the testing upon murphy's law and making sure that there is pretty much no way to fuck it up in a way that causes global devastation.
There were some of that. https://i.imgur.com/EF8o29L.jpg NUCLEAR NIGHTMARE! HORROR! THOUSANDS DOOMED! CORPSES MOUNTING IN RADIATION PITS! Still that's like, absolutely nothing compared to fucking atomic shitstorm holocaust that was coverage of Fukushima for example.
Oh look, Daily Express, even back then they were posting fucking terrible headlines, they haven't changed at all.
I guess back then it was partially due to the cold war and the lingering fear of nuclear war, you want to reinforce the soviets = bad (They just killed us all!!) https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/660/cpsprodpb/8401/production/_107039733_ex21p01.jpg Just as I was posting this in polidicks, Pottery in motion.
Those are British tabloids though. I think Skarp was more talking about mainstream TV news.
My mom was watching the HBO mini-series and the way she tells it the days and weeks after it happened as nonchalant as the news was; a lot of her family and friends were worried because they weren't sure what was going on.
