This gave me new found respect for Williams, another class A vid from Lindsay Ellis.
Man. Now I'm sad.
Great video.
Robin Williams really was one of a kind.
I had no doubt before and this just reinforces it.
Fuck Petty Asshole
Fuck Disney.
Lindsay Ellis is such an incredibly talented video-essay creator that although I had actually heard a fair bit about this subject before it will still fascinating.
If you needed more reasons to hate Disney, let me ruin their comics for you, as told by Duck comics legend Don Rosa himself (scroll down to "Reason #1: The Disney comics system" and prepare to get mad as you read how they screwed this man for twenty years).
I missed out on a lot of Rosa's Duck comics growing up, and I want to complete a collection for nostalgia and completion's sake. I'm not advocating unlimited piracy for everything, but in this specific situation I find no moral qualms in pirating Disney's Rosa comics -- he's literally not being paid for any print copy in distribution and they suckered him until he was burnt out and didn't want to do comics anymore, which is an artistic warcrime.
I honestly think Petty Asshole KatsenBUG should get the flak for Robin and not Disney as a whole. Dude went back on Robin the instant he saw money signs on the revised Aladdin poster and milked the Genie as much as he could. Lindsay makes it clear that this dude was in it for the money for the wrong reasons and the minute he was let go Disney was starting to get better. Almost (see live action Disney remakes). Imagine actually going back on a dude like Robin Williams, who has a real soft spot for animation and wants all manner of kids and families to enjoy the movie, so that you can make some big bucks piggybacking on his performance. Even the animators felt like shit for what Petty Asshole did.
After the recent news of one marvel comic artist crunching while bedridden on extensive cancer treatment and fucking dying it seems perfectly on brand.
Someone please expropiate and send everything disney related to the public domain + destroy copyright laws to spite them further
From the article:
Eventually it hit me — all the European fans assumed that I was a millionaire. They assumed that when I sat at a book store signing the 30 Euro books the store was selling, I was getting a 5 Euro cut on each sale! Whoa! I had never minded not getting wealthy off this job I loved. But it became really annoying when I discovered that everyone assumed I was getting huge royalties. They could never imagine that such a system exists in this day and age (or that an author/artist would be so stupid as to participate in it). I started feeling like a world-class chump.
Dona Rosa is really big in the Scandinavian countries, especially since the official Donald Duck magazine is way bigger than the official Mickey Mouse comic books. I can´t count the number of times there has been (often half-hearted admittingly) talk of boycotts due to this exact issue. While I have never met the man himself (sadly) I know that the Disney Comic system tended to be a point of conversation a lot.
