I just put a material folder with over 4000 textures, now hammer won't open.

I just ported a game textures to Source, now I opened Hammer to see how it looks, and Hammer opens for a second then crashes.
I look at other material folders and they have separate folders for certain things, am I to do the same?
What kind of textures are you putting into Hammer, anyways?
Very cool, but I dont think you need that many textures anyways if I'm going to be honest. A lot look like filler

Well. How many mapping (lightmapped and unlit) materials does gmod have? How many other mods do you have and how many mapping materials do they have?
Altogether i think hammer could crash around 32k file handles. Atleast that is the limit sfm can handle.
I see those big packs for the Half-life 2 game textures to be on gmod, but I have no clue how to do that.
I tried doing that but it still does that, I convert a whole folder under tools in VTFedit, did both VTF and TGA, what?
