So what's happening with the original steam app?
Is there much reason to as why they would have made an entirely new app just for the chat?
They probably couldn't implement it without breaking the pube string structure the steam app is built on. The only thing the app is good for is the mobile authentication. Beyond that it feels like browsing the steam mobile website.
Eh, I wish they would just let you use a standalone OTP authenticator.
Nice, I really hated how outdated the previous one was.

It's going to become an Epic Store Exclusive due to its innovative basket feature, the code for which was located on ancient Egyptian tablets buried underneath the cavernous depths of the Sphinx.
I don't know why they made this one when the other one could stand to use some work, understandably they could've just had this in a 'beta' state and worked on the other features as a 'rework' for future so people can migrate to this app.
Does it support group chat?
yes.
Oh boy, I can't wait to have to use a dysfunctional piece of shit but on the go!!!! Seriously, I don't know if it's me or what, but since the friends/chat UI update on Steam desktop, I've barely been able to use it on all four computers I own that has Steam installed. The overlay locks up if there's more than three video embeds in my active chat tab, it keeps closing windows entirely on its own when I'm not looking, often times any windows I have open just turn into black square voids like it's failing to render entirely, and to this day I have not managed to send a single image to anyone with direct upload. It just spits either a generic server error, or claims that I'm not even logged in. Like what the actual fuck? At least the current Steam mobile app has mostly functional chat, no emotes or image embeds (not like I care about the former, and the latter at least puts a link I can tap to open) but at least I can fucking talk to people on it. At worst it just sends multiples of one message if I hit a spotty signal on mobile data or Wi-Fi.
6 years too late
The group chat systems were a complete mess until a year ago. I'd hate to see what it looked like behind the scenes
Lmao It only displays a quarter of my friend's list unless I scroll down. Then they appear one by one unless I scroll back up disappearing again :V
Bizarre feeling to log into a Steam app, which then asks you to authenticate your log in with a different Steam app, which doesn't allow copying, so you have to switch back and forth between Steam apps to log into your Steam app. This is the hellscape universe we have created for ourselves
Don't forget you have limited time to type the code in before it resets
hahahaha yeah the first time I went in, I specifically waited for the existing code to expire because I didn't think I could get it in time. but five characters is at least short enough that I can say it out loud a couple times, then swap over and punch it in. some people with varying degrees of short term character memorization may not have that luxury though
I get mine as a notification. Just look at the top of the screen shit security but
Steam stopped showing me the code in notifications, I have disabled and re-enabled the app's notifications in both the app and Android settings multiple times to no effect. I'm running the Android P beta so maybe it has something to do with it, but they used to work and now they don't so something must have happened
I'm not sure if it can be a relatable issue across the platforms but on iOS I had the same thing happen, disabling 2fa, reinstalling the app, then enabling 2fa again got the notifications coming once more. If I remember right it was a major version jump in the OS that broke them for me.
Any decent 2FA solution (including Steam) will give you a window within which a code is valid. The code isn't invalidated as soon as it changes.
They're working on modernizing it as well.
Neat.
Not even a week ago they added Steam Link to iOS App Store, so clearly they’re addressing the problem of their mobile app being severely outdated. The official response to the why question makes sense.. it’s apparently easier to modify and add to individual features without messing up other ones and creating new issues by having them on different update threads ie separate apps. It also sounds like they’re dealing with separate teams on each of these dedicated features, giving the possibility that one teams update could be halted by compatibility with other teams builds

I'll be honest ever since discord I've never used steam for social stuff
Are you sure though? The window can't be more than a few seconds. I've definitely failed the check because I wasn't fast enough before.
oooooh that's neat. I don't think I even knew the Steam app had a widget tbqh. and as for opening the app, I have a Pixel 2 so I'm just used to doing the swipe gesture to get to the app drawer, if I give it a good one, the momentum will get me all the way to the bottom and I can tap on the app almost right away :V sure it might be the hard way but I guess it's what my fingers are used to
The window should be an entire code interval. This is one of the most fundamental tenets of TOTP 2FA, so I'd be shocked if it's not the case.
