Oh man I literally FEEL how much of a pain in the ass this game is going to be just from looking at it. It comes off as being even more ruthlessly methodical than the original DS.
Visually looks as good as a 2.5(.25? Isometric? Idk)D 16 bit game can possibly get, but I'm gonna have to play it myself because neither the visuals nor the actual gameplay shown are selling me on much TBH. Banking a bit too much on its nostalgic branding and "soulslike" gameplay. Do hope it brings something new to the table.
Not in the slightest. People forget how good 16-bit games looked because these days all of the '16-bit' games have no detail and little artistic direction. If anything the 16-bit style has regressed since it's no longer about pushing hardware limitations and more about trying to graphics with an arbitrary limitation. If it was meant to look and feel like it could play on a Mega Drive or SNES (even if it's actually impossible) they would have a goal to hit. This game doesn't look terrible but it's fairly bland looking from the trailer. Personally I don't think this style of game works particularly well in an isometric view, it's too imprecise and detached.
i'm absolutely mesmerized by the beautifully flat, rectangular environments and stuttery movement
I'm pretty damn sick of both indie and AAA devs trying to ape the Souls games.
It's getting tiresome to see the Souls-like genre when it's just played straight in general. It visually looks fine, but it really does seem like just straight up From-style Souls-like game made by an indie company. These games really need to have things that set them apart more, like how Nioh is this faster paced almost character-action like Souls-game ala Ninja Gaiden with juggles, combos and everything. Even Sekiro did things to differentiate itself from what From has been doing often and instead just made a straight up action game with the Souls-like formula being restricted to the base feeling of movement and some themes, but otherwise is also a different game compared to their previous entries from the recent years.
i want to let you all know why i like this project so much. yes its an indie soulslike that doesn't look too different from dark souls however from my understanding the game plays more like an character driven story rpg inspired by norse mythology. the combat system doesn't use stamina so instead of limiting your dodge rolls and shielding capability the enemies are smarter and have similar capabilities to the player (depending on how smart the enemy is). it may not look like it in a lot of the videos they've shown off but i believe that the combat does play very smoothly and is very rewarding. heres a video that better shows off a one on one fight with a quick and smart enemy. https://twitter.com/DavidSpaceDuck/status/1119701290844450817 also the whole game is basically made by one korean dude who does most of the concept art, pixel art, animation, programming and coding with his wife doing additional concept art and environment art and 2 other programmers working on lighting and shaders, optimization and additional features outside of the core of the game. there is a press demo to be released some time over the next week so we will hopefully hear good things about it so far. i'm happy to admit i was wrong in believing in the project if it ends up being shit, but i'm remaining optimistic at this stage until we know more.
I don't think the enemy is 'smart'? It just looks very methodical and that the only way to get your hits in is to block and then perform reversals (in the example you posted). Nevertheless I don't see any major fault or plus with the game, you are free to love the game as it fits you.
But I haven't even finished Unworthy or Death's Gambit D:
