https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/05/23/nancy-pelosi-donald-trump-crying-out-impeachment-dems-not-there/1204532001/ WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused President Donald Trump of trying to goad Democrats into pursuing impeachment but said her caucus is not taking the bait. She said Trump's vow not to work with Democrats on shared priorities such as infrastructure rebuilding was rooted in frustration that "the House Democratic caucus is not on the path to impeachment and that’s where he wants us to be.” Pelosi, who spoke at a news conference on Capitol Hill, said she believed Trump is "crying out" for impeachment and when he realized Democrats would not go that route "that’s why he flipped yesterday." Trump walked out of a meeting with congressional leaders Wednesday and said he would not work with House Democrats unless Pelosi suspends several investigations lawmakers have launched into his presidency and finances.   Despite a growing clamor to begin an impeachment inquiry, Pelosi has sought to tamp down the calls, telling Democrats to focus on fact finding first. She did, however, say that the investigations "may take us to a place that’s unavoidable on impeachment or not.” Pretty disingenuous since Trump's blocking over 20 seperate congressional probes, which is impeachable in itself
Pelosi is going to lead the destruction of any protections we have. This woman is playing with fire and ignoring the fact she's covered in gasoline.
pelosi really needs to drop the neoliberal bullshit.
Why is everyone so damn stupid right now... There's literally maybe 10 people I feel confident in within Congress.
Even IF that were true: why wouldn’t we do that? It’s like she watched the 2016 South Park season and thought the “I would be a terrible president” “my opponent is lying” bit was a good strategy.
She's not stupid. She's lying about her motivations. The real reason is that if they impeached Trump and actually succeeded, we'd get President Pence, who will be a far more difficult opponent in the 2020 elections. She and the establishment Dems are counting on Trump still being president so Joe Biden can slide right into office and return us to the Pre-Trump status quo. And if this grand scheme fails and we get four more years of Trump? Eh, that's four more years Pelosi and co can milk without actually doing a damn thing.
And that's assuming they can successfully screw Bernie over again like they did last time.
There's no reason to assume they couldn't. At the end of the day, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are private entities with zero oversight.
While the DNC did screw with bernie and prefered hillary, its not their fault that he had abysmal results in the south where he didn't connect with minority voters at all. Its a republican talking point that the dnc conspired to destroy bernie, and ya there was a little fuckery but he had no realistic way to win the primary after super tuesday as there were barely enough votes left to even get a mathematical advantage.
And why do you think that is, hrm? Could it possibly have been because the DNC didn't want him to win and thus stacked the deck against him such that he was unable to campaign in those states? I live east of Nashville and I see more Bernie 2016 bumper stickers than MAGA bumper stickers.
How could they have prevented him from campaigning there? 538's 2020 analysis shows black voters don't dislike Sanders, but prefer other candidates
I mean, this is genuinely a good point. I honestly don't think this is a bad idea to be anti-Impeach Trump for. I mean, I want him impeached. Precedent needs to be followed through, in this regard. But the implications are worrying.
Are you kidding? He has even better advantages this time around. The democratic field is incredibly split, siphoning off votes from Biden and letting Bernie's policy-based campaign rather than the neoliberal strategy of going "hey, look at how shit these other guys are" shine. Sure polls show Biden leading, but that's because we haven't really gotten into campaigning season yet, much less the debates. Biden is a far far worse candidate than Hillary was, so once his inadequacies are exposed Bernie has a good shot. I've literally talked to political insiders of the Democratic party through my fraternity at my college who think that Bernie has a decent shot because of that.
Trump's already got prison time lined up the second he's out of office. This doesn't include the 16 separate still-ongoing investigations, and the 10 possible counts of obstruction. He's totally fucked. Which is why he is going to do everything he can to remain in office, including using the constitution to wipe his ass
President Biden will pardon him and all his conspirators in the name of befriending the republican party and true centrism
and the grinder wheels will keep turning.
There's zero chance of that happpening
This is why the state-level investigations need to continue, so no matter who follows Trump they can't give him a get out of jail free card like Gerald Ford did to Nixon, whether that person be a party-loyal Republican or a spineless establishment Democrat.
"Criminals want to be charged with crimes and keep committing them so that we'll charge them but we won't because we're better than that." -Speaker Pelosi, 2019
Something that both Republicans and Democrats can agree on: Nancy Pelosi is fucking retarded.
If he did that he'd instantly cause riots
Trump's organization is very likely cooking their books in some way, and since trump has not relinquished ownership, and since his organization is all a pyramid of sole proprietorships, he will have a hard time fighting off the state level investigations, plus a presidential pardon can be targeted to certain crimes not just a blanket pardon.
Reading the article, I love Pelosi. She seems like an adult in the room that knows how to deal with Trump's childishness. She followed those remarks Thursday saying the investigations "may take us to a place that’s unavoidable, on impeachment, or not. But we're not at that place.” And another rep: “I have a feeling that this lawless president is going to force us there,’’ Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., said Thursday. “I don’t think we’re there right this minute. I think it’s important that we go through the process of the courts.’’ I like this strategy. I think if your goal is to make sure Trump doesn't get reelected in 2020, which is my goal and I believe Nancy's goal, impeachment right now is a bad idea. Removal of office requires a 2/3rds majority vote in the Senate. Look at the Senate map. The spineless republicans in congress have seen the Mueller report and it seems like they don't really care that our president is a traitor and a criminal. Trump wouldn't be removed and the whole thing risks energizing his base ahead of the 2020 elections. Plus, there's still information to gather. You see the republicans in congress spouting about how Democrats are suffering from Trump derangement syndrome and are rushing to impeach an innocent man because the dems are sore losers. Maybe we'll learn enough to tip the scales, or at least learn enough to keep reminding the voters about how shitty/unamerican Trump is in every facet of his life. I dunno, the public right now doesn't support impeachment. The independents support it less now than they did in January. I just want Trump to lose in 2020 so we can throw him in jail. I trust Nancy so far with how she's handling this. I can understand thinking that it sets a bad precedent. I believe the house can put out some official statement saying what the president has done is impeachable, and they should, but I don't see how impeaching him is going to work. I really don't see how Nancy not wanting to "rush impeachment" is a ploy to stop Pence from replacing Trump and ensuring Trump can lose to Biden. That would have to mean Trump would be removed from office. I definitely think this is a political move, but that's asinine.
Pence would be a more difficult opponent? No! Because someone challenging him in a debate can just point out that he (and by extension his party) are proven to be corrupt and I doubt Pence would have a retort that's not God of the Grove style redirection Whats more concerning is if they try to impeach him and fail. Trump can use this! "Ah you see the democrats - they claim I'm corrupt, yet they intentionally spiked the deck but as always I came up on top - I'm the only guy telling the truth in all of this!" Would sway a lot of gullible swing voters, if I'm telling the truth
Because Ford never pardoned Nixon, right?
Ford was the same party as Nixon. Biden has been friends with Republicans his whole life but there's no way he'd pardon anyone that managed to actually be charged with something, it would kill the Democrats
People said that about trump getting elected
Yeah this is why every scenario is now equally likely. I heard Trump is gonna offer universal healthcare next week, actually. Either way, Pelosi is right not to pursue impeachment. It's not obvious that all democrats would even vote for impeachment in the house in the first place, and for the Trump to actually be removed, the republicans in the senate would have to suddenly grow a conscience. Beyond the democratic base it's not gonna be seen as a very popular move, and might look extremely partisan, even illegitimate, to some swing voters. What would you rather have? A failed impeachment process or a better chance to beat Trump in 2020?
Fair enough , I get your point.
Hate to back the unpopular opinion here, but Pelosi kind of has a point, answering to her real motivations, and not the shit she's making up. Unless I was mistaken, impeachment requires a two thirds Congressional majority. Democrats don't have nearly that much pull, and even the Republicans who think he's guilty will vote along party lines, as they always have. Mike Pence's first act as POTUS would be to pardon Trump, because the move would make him insanely popular among his fascist Republican base, and he knows there's no way in hell any of the Democrats he would make furious by doing that would vote for him anyway, being the religious fundamentalist shitstain that he is. And there's simply not enough evidence to convict him of anything himself, so that angle is out. Now that Biden's in the race, if he wins the Dem nomination (which is looking likely) he doesn't have nearly as good a chance of beating Pence as he does Trump. Because voters tend to be fucking morons, as evidenced by the fact Trump got elected in the first place. So the way I see it, Pelosi's playing the long game. It doesn't make her popular among the left, since we're all baying for blood, but it does give us the best chance of two things: Taking back the US government from the fascists in 2020, and making sure that if we put Trump in prison, he remains there for life. She's no progressive, but she's sharp. I wish more people would see that.
