Is this that ride that blows scented air at you?
I remember really liking that ride as a kid.
Yes it is. My family had a bunch of DCA tickets when I was little due to work connections. As a kid I got bored going on this ride so many times because I wanted fast roller coasters but this was my mom's favorite ride. When I was a teen and I went back on it, it was just a much nicer experience than I remembered. I grew up in Cali so this ride in particular gave me a sense of home seeing what the entire state had to offer.
I really want to go back to Cali but the cost of living is too expensive for anyone making less than 150k on a single income to afford any type of house.
bring it to epcot so i can hear that music and smell those oranges again

I don’t see why they can’t run multiple variations of the ride like some of their other simulator rides! I might be a bit biased because I hold a lot of emotional value and nostalgia for this ride (imagine tearing up at orange fields), but it's sad to hear that it's going out for good this time.
And I know it's a completely different experience, but watching POV videos of the Around The World version really just feels like the charm and soul of the original is largely lost. Really gonna miss that CGI golfball.
I don't understand why they would bother taking this away. It's such an iconic ride in both WDW and DL.
The original has more live footage then Around the World does, that's why it has charm. The original had a perfectly timed Thunderbirds flyby while the new one has cheap transition effects and a metric crap ton of CGI animals to make the scene "feel alive".
And then there's the amazingly done Eiffel Tower scene. If you aren't in the middle section, second row, and in the middle of that glider, then you get this from every other viewpoint:

It's pure CGI, they could've done some trickery to not warp it as badly.
Live footage will always be better than CG if it's feasible. Your brain can tell that the CGI is fake.
You're spot on. If it was less cheesed up, or just less used, I think most would have less issues with it (those that do have issues with it, which isn't everyone). Like the glider guy and the golf ball in the original version, they were small and didn't have much impact (quick) on the scene so most would overlook them. But in the current version, it's in your face and is meant to draw your attention to it.
The Taj Mahal scene is 100% cgi because they couldn't get permission to fly over it and honestly, it's nice. There's nothing they shove in your face.
attempting to cheat perspective in the virtual scene would be pointless. in the end either you project on a flat screen and the image no longer aligns with anyones FOV and lacks any presence, or you project on a concave screen where there's some apparent warping of large objects if you're not in the sweet spot but at least you get somewhat natural FOV. only other options are to stick a headset on everyone or use dark artes to make things physically appear in the room. disney i hear is well on track for the dark artes approach
