Florida Rep. Mike Hill told a group in Pensacola on Thursday that God told him to sponsor a bill next year to ban nearly all abortions, much like the bill that passed in Alabama earlier this
month. Hill sponsored a bill in the Florida Legislature this session that would have banned abortions if a fetal heartbeat was detected. Although the bill picked up 20 co-sponsors, it died
without ever getting a hearing in any committee.
Speaking at a meeting of Women for Responsible Legislation at Pensacola City Hall, Hill said the fetal heartbeat bill was modeled on other states that had passed similar bills and
included exceptions for rape, incest, domestic violence, human trafficking or if the woman's life is in danger.
The Republican lawmaker said he wasn't happy with the exceptions in the bill, but thought it would make it more palatable and give it a better chance of passing. Hill said that he was at an
anti-abortion rally a few weeks ago in Pensacola and while the keynote speaker was delivering a speech, God spoke to him.
"As plain as day, God spoke to me," Hill said. "He said that wasn't my bill, talking about the heartbeat detection bill that I filed. He said that wasn't my bill. I knew immediately what he was
talking about. He said, you remove those exceptions and you file it again. And I said yes Lord, I will. It's coming back. It's coming back. We are going to file that bill without any exceptions
just like what we saw passed in Alabama."
The group of close to 20 people in the room applauded and cheered Hill's remarks.
Church and state
Maybe if god told more than one fruit-loop, we wouldn't be so skeptical.
Is there some kind of pro-life lobbying firm or is it entirely religion? I mean I understand this is Florida we’re talking about but still, is there any other motivation to do this so fast?
What if God tells a woman to have an abortion?
Don't believe it, It's a scam caller!
If a politician says the words "God told me.." they should be immediately removed from office.
God told me you're a cunt, Mike. Sorry, but God said it. His words.
Was it that the speech inspired his brain to come to the conclusion that he should do this? Someone should tell him that's called an Idea and that people in the habit of thinking have those all the time without divine intervention.
Quoting God or any theology as grounds for passing any kind of law or bill should be grounds to have you removed from your position
If this guy's hearing voices he should be in a mental hospital, not a capitol building.
God also told me that this man's forehead can be seen from space. Gods words not mine...
A literal sociopath as usual, yikes.
god told to do this blatantly retarded thing that no sane person wants or needs
You know, out of curiosity; I wonder what the devil has to say on this matter?
The best part of these mother fuckers is that virtually every single one of them would have their teenage daughter have an abortion
to be fair jesus never really hated the rich per se. he just said that you'd have a hard time getting into heaven using the camel and the needle's eye statement, even jehovah said that provided you followed god's commandments and did good towards your fellows, you'd prosper and live long. He just hated rich assholes who stamp all over everyone else.
Fun fact about the Bible: it describes life as beginning when the infant first draws "the breath of the almighty". Sure doesn't sound like "life begins at conception" to me.
That's okay, God told someone else to kill the parasites in office such aa yourselves.
If God is telling you to do something, it's probably time to drop out of politics and become a hermit, preferably the fasting in the desert kind.
So he's a prophet? Is this guy pretending he's a prophet of god? The balls on these people.
So what about those people who kill their kids because God told them to... they're just nuts, right?
i'm pretty sure speaking out of your ass on behalf of God is blasphemy
God's telling me to march into your home and crush your head like a watermelon with my thighs but you don't see me giving into It's vicious commands.
I too make major legislative decisions that affect millions of people based on voices in my head.
It's all a power grab using religion as a scapegoat to keep the people in power on top, just like the attacks on education by them. Suppress the ability to express thought by keeping people mired with child-raising against their will so they are stuck in a perpetual, hellish cycle of trying to make ends meet so they can't oppose their ideologies towards establishing a theocracy (as you see where often, people can't protest because they need to work). If it was truly about the child's life, they would be willing to increase taxes to support the existence of these children of the poor, because people would be more willing to have children if they knew there was a future where they could afford to have their sons and daughters live outside of poverty. (Of course, that's ignoring the many other reasons for why abortions are necessary to maintain being legal, but don't expect these people to have any sense of complexity or nuance when they often have an overlap with creationists where they both manage to be ignorant of science and their religion when pushing their agenda.)
There are still people out there that think bats couldn't evolve because the intermediate form wouldn't be able to walk when the bats of today are still very capable of walking, climbing, running, swimming and even galloping on the ground, they just don't often do so outside of New Zealand because flying is safer.
what if God IS a woman?
wait, maybe that'll work, they won't listen to her then because women have no say in anything, apparently
I thought the whole point of the pope was that he was the only one god talks to? But then, that's not a convenient excuse to be an insufferable prick.
Most politicians are protestants and one of the key differences between it and Catholicism is that they defy the papacy.
Ironically, a major reason Protestantism even exists is to be defiant of many of the biblical teachings so they could just say whatever they want is acceptable, and yet in America they try to take it literally when even Catholicism says the Bible is meant to be figurative in most cases and stories.
A blatant example is the concept of divorce, which is not valid in the Bible [Catholicism instead requires annulment. Basically, the context is that in a divorce, the marriage still existed but has ended, but in an annulment, the marriage is considered to have retroactively never occurred]. Another is that Catholics believe that it's good deeds that get you to heaven, while Protestantism basically assumes that you can do anything you want as long as you believe in God and that what you do in life doesn't matter as long as this holds true. Examples of the Bible suggesting otherwise:
'What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.' -James 2:14-17
"You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone." - James 2:24
"“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." -Matthew 7:21
(The Bible is rather cryptic about non-believers. It often mentions damning the faithless, but this could just be interpreted as someone who is prone to betrayal, as there are a few scriptures which suggest that deeds can cause salvation)
"Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law." -Romans 13:8
"Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs." -Proverbs 10:12
"In the way of righteousness there is life; along that path is immortality." -Proverbs 12:28
Basically, Protestantism is the religious Christian equivalent of feels-before-reals and was entirely built around the concept that it's okay to be disobedient of it and that you could get away with anything if you use faith as your card.
