News media is always a game of he said, she said. The reality of the matter is that Fox News is fantastic at creating bogus controversy. If 50% of the country is hearing something and the other 50% is not hearing/unable to make comment on it, you effectively start a cult of personality.
News used to be about things that were actually happening and important but with the advent of 24h news network and the current era's constant need for new stuff, the news has to manufacture more and more content. The easiest source for this? Other news outlets.

There was a god damn Special Counsel investigation into obstruction affairs for reasons including, but not limited to, the fact Trump admitted, on national TV, that he fired the FBI director to take some heat off the "Russia thing"
There was fucking nothing to kick off the birther movement (save for racist bias), and while Mueller, a seasoned veteran of the investigations bureau, provided an extensive report which could not exonerate Trump, the only "investigation" that took place regarding Obama's birth was conducted by none other than pardoned criminal Joe "we already have a concentration camp" Arpaio. To play up the "enlightened centrist" angle that both sides are capable of petty investigations and that both sides are bad, therefore Republicans are the more trustworthy side because they're willing to admit to their bullshit unlike Dumbocrats.
I haven't watched television news in at least a decade outside of the local morning news.
Read a major national newspaper. When it comes to the facts, Wall Street Journal and New York Times are highly reliable and keep the partisan politics to the editorial section.
